Gaming 'Guilty Pleasures'

Post by Sel Feena » Thu Oct 08, 2015 9:31 am

Enjoying reading everyone's posts in the other recent threads, so I thought I'd add on to that and ask: what games do you consider your guilty pleasures? For me I'd have to say the top 3 are probably

Hyperdimension Neptunia
The gameplay is really mediocre, but I genuinely like the characters and silly plots
IdolM@ster
Absolutely pure cheese, would never hear the end of it if my gaming work colleagues knew I loved this series
Touhou
Funny one, this. I think the games are legit and great fun, if a little short. But the fandom surrounding the characters and setting is pretty cringeworthy

Tokyo Bus Guide on the Dreamcast.
On paper, this would be something I'd avoid like the plague but I love it.

digitised games, no matter how bad.

in my 1990s brain this is the peak of graphical power.

Too many to list. I love a lemon. If a game is supposedly rubbish, I tend to be able to get some fun out of it. Two Worlds, Godzilla, this new Tony Hawk game. Flawed games often have more personality whereas an Ubisoft game is generally well accomplished but usually too dry and disinteresting for me to persist with.

There's a real spectrum of quality too, on one side there's Flashback and then you've got Pit Fighter!

Ditto with both of these. Shame that Neptunia's gameplay just couldn't keep me awake for too long as I was loving the madness of the characters and plot. Love those awful early-90's FMV experiments too though these days I'm mostly relegated to simply watching vids on the internet as I no longer own the sorts of machines (3DO etc.) to actually play them. Plus, many (such as Plumbers Don't Wear Ties) are quite uncommon and command high prices due to all the internet publicity that has sprang up around them in recent years.

Some more of mine that I would happily play:

Dead or Alive Xtreme + Paradise
Rumble Roses
Corpse Killer
Michigan: Report from Hell
Demolition Girl
Onechanbara
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

Eh? Flashback isn't digitised :?

Also is Pit-Fighter a guilty pleasure? It got rave reviews back in the day, was incredibly successful for Atari and made a lot of money. If it is then I guess this is mine as it's one of my top 5 games of all time.

I knew someone would pull me up on that. To my mind they all roll into one, but you're right. So I guess the Gold Standard for me would be Mortal Kombat. They still look great!

I now have the urge to be a censored and start a 'What game are you most defensive about' thread :P

Lynx version is good too, the rest of the versions are different shades of censored (the Game Boy puts on a decent show though considering!)

The arcade game is fun but the SNES version is awful.

my biggest guilty pleasure is something I don't even own and have never played - the atari jaguar

I have wanted one of these since the year it was released (I chose a cd32 instead of a jag) and have contemplated getting one ever since and there's always been some reason or other not to.

think I am about to treat myself to one as a Xmas pressie, but they are expensive. working out about £200 for a good condition one with a few boxed games

Stuff made by Interceptor Micros. Much which was subpar, but for some psychological reason I have not worked out yet, I always wanted to want to play them.
