Amiga 1200's - why so expensive?

Post by station » Mon Oct 05, 2015 7:49 am

I've been looking for a while for a 1200. I still have mine in it's box that I got in 1992, but there is a fault on the motherboard.

They all seem to go for around £150 (whereas the 500's go for a fraction of this) - is there still a big community for these wonderful machines, or is it something else?
I think I'm going to take the plunge and just pay the money,

Because people install CF cards and have access to thousands of Amiga games without having to buy anything else after, the A1200 is best 'budget' machine to do this so the prices stay high.

It also has to be said that the machine wasn't exactly a rip-roaring success at the time and only a few hundred thousand were ever made, versus around four million Amiga 500s.

There aren't a lot of them out there and the people who've got them are tending to hang on to them.

Just get your A1200 refurbished with a CF card added.
It's not worth buying physical games anymore unless you like to look at them on your shelves, too many of the disks are corrupted.

Who fixes them?
It stopped working in 1994. The last time I got it out it worked, but about five minutes later it died again.

Faulty capacitors and battery leaks are the most common causes for failure. Re-capping the Amiga (needs new capacitors and some soldering knowledge) and checking for leaks / corrosion solves most problems. There are websites that offer that services, but you might find someone that does that locally.

Have you ever seen the Amiga A1200 CD drive?

Well take a look at this video of the only known CD1200 prototype in existence!

Now think how much that will cost?
