The Guitarists Thread

Post by Sureshot » Sat Jan 26, 2008 9:19 am

It's about time we had one of these!

So, here are some choice questions to get the ball rolling:

How long have you been playing?
What guitar(s) do you own?
What about equipment?
What was your first ever guitar, and do you still own it?
What's your favourite guitar maker & guitar?
What genres of music do you like playing most?
Are you in a band?
What guitar(s) do you have serious GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) for at the moment? (and might realistically own)
Which do you dream to fork out for once you win the lottery?
Who is your favourite guitarist? (other than yourself!)
Got any guitar-related stories?

Any guitar porn you have, post it here too.

For me:

I've been playing since I was about 17/18 (~7-8 years ago), and my first guitar was a Tanglewood Pioneer which I bought off a mate off school (and allegedly was fitted with Seymore Duncans, although I never verified that):

Image

It's on the left in that picture. On the right is an Epiphone G400 SG which I bought in around 2003/2004, and I actually sold the Tanglewood a couple of weeks later to fund its purchase. I am a little sad about that, as alright, it wasn't the best guitar in the world, but they say you should never sell your first and I do miss it a bit. Also, the SG is now sitting at home back in England in bits after I was going to do a pickup change and never quite got around to finishing it.

Around this time, I also bought a Washburn D10S which is still up and running, but also sitting back in England as I didn't bother taking it over with me:

Image

Around 3 years ago, I picked up a Cort X6, which is a nice enough guitar but I was never 100% comfortable with it. Here it is next to the SG, which I'd not dismantled by that time:

Image

You can also see my Peavey Blazer 158, Behringer V-Amp 2 and Boss MD-2 pedal in that pic, all of which I still own.

Around 12 months ago I bought an Ibanez S470. Brilliant guitar which is really nice to play, lovely fat mahogany tones yet so slim at the same time. I also picked up a Roland Cube 30 about 6 months ago:

Image
Image

(Don't have my full photo of the S470 around, so just used a stock one for now)

With regard to other equipment, I use Ernie Ball Slinkys (.10) and the .88 green Tortex picks.

Favourite guitar maker... that's a tough one really as I haven't had a chance to try a whole lot out, but I'd probably go with Ibanez. They have a whole bunch of awesome guitars, including the DT420 which I really wouldn't mind getting my hands on. Other than this, I'd love a SG Special in Wine Red (yes, the old chiché) and maybe pick up a Jackson DXMG dinky or something similar, although my S470 kinda fills that hole for a bit now.

Genres - Well, the majority of stuff I play is metal or punk, although I definitely cross boundaries to indie, grunge and so on. Also play some acoustic stuff and video game music :)

I'm not in a band, wouldn't mind trying but as I'm hardly the greatest guitarist in the world, I've never taken the plunge. I could probably handle being in a punk band but I either make too many mistakes or have the attention span of a goldfish when it comes to learning complicated stuff.

Fave guitarist is probably Tom Morello - was a huge RATM fan all through secondary school and his exploration of he instrument has always blown me away. He was probably one of my inspirations for picking up a guitar in the first place, as I was eager to try and mimic his techniques. Other than this, honourable mentions would go to Joe Satriani, Michael Angelo Batio, Slash and Randy Rhoads.

No exciting guitar-related stories really, although when I first started out I must have broken about 30 strings in the space of 6 months due to a) my technique and the force I used to play at and b) I was using a bass pick which was given to me by my old boss to start me off. Luckily, along with the pick, he gave me a massive bag of strings to go with it as he'd just changed gauge :P

Enough rambling from me, your turn.

Well im a bassist and i have

Music Man Sub
ESP F-404
ESP B-104

I use Boss and Digitech Bass pedals. I've got a 350 watt hartke head and 350 watt Cab which blew up last night at the gig i was playing :x

I've been playing for about 15 years and am still pretty average. Don't really go in for all the fancy slap and pop stuff. Volume over talent is my motto.

Currently i play bass for Blindsight (www.myspace.com/blindsightzone). been doing this for 5 years now. Been lucky enough to support a couple of big band. Also used to play in another band called Beyond Our Means and am currently working on a couple of projects.

I also have a reaaly heavy handed technique and i regulaly snap the top bass string. I've even snapped the thickest gauge of a five string bass!!!!

How long have you been playing? About 6 years now, but haven't touched a guitar for months now...
What guitar(s) do you own? An Epiphone Les Paul and an acoustic one from Art & Lutherie.
What about equipment? a Yamaha 60W and a small one (can't remember what brand)
What was your first ever guitar, and do you still own it? yes, but it was the kind of guitar you buy for a tenner so that you can learn a few chords before moving on to the real deal...
What's your favourite guitar maker & guitar? Gibson Les Paul
What genres of music do you like playing most? I like to play everything...
Are you in a band? No...
What guitar(s) do you have serious GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) for at the moment? None
Which do you dream to fork out for once you win the lottery? The ones I own are enough...
Who is your favourite guitarist? (other than yourself!) Noel Gallagher! I know, he's not a guitar hero, but I do love everything he does...
Otherwise, I like Eric Clapton.
Got any guitar-related stories? Er... no... Not even Guitar Hero-related ones...

I sold my SNES collection back in 1995 to fund my guitar, a cheap stratocaster copy. I'm not a guitar hero at all, my niche was rhythm, basic power chords and more often tuning to D. I couldn't do scales if I tried! Our band started to progress from plain old vanilla alternative to a heavier sound but when the band broke up the guitar went in the wardrobe and it's been there since 1999. Damn shame really as I do miss playing the old girl, yes it was a "lookalike" guitar but it had a great sound and it really shone with distortion. I might go past my Mum's house and pick it up, I'd love to get back into it.

Cool thread.

Dont have much equipment these days.

Just traded my Les Paul for an Ibanez S470, played through 100 watt Marshall, the new fm dial is awesome (I think it will be standard on all guitars soon), and a Zoom effects pedal. Have a Berringer mixing unit too, and an ibanez accoustic.

Dont get to play as much as I used too. Can check out some tunes on sig link btw, both tracks were thrown together, scratch vocal performed by my M8 Neil.

Thats an awesome collection Sureshot, how are you finding the cube amp, sorely tempted to buy one...

Favourite guitarist is a difficult one, probably Gary Moore, Izzy Stradlin, Randy Rhodes or Angus Young, I love all the great guitarists, but do think that the GNR boys are a tad overated, unlike Mick Mars who I thoink is vastly underated when you consider what he had to work with with Motley..

Been playing for about 15 years now, only the last year have I really made any effort to refine what im doing and challenge myself with the guitar.

I'm loving the Cube. It's great if you don't have the budget/space to be splashing out on massive stacks and pedalboards because it's got modelling and effects built-in. Granted, you probably wouldn't be able to gig on it or anything and it hardly does every effect and sound under the sun, but it's great for messing around on. Sounds awesome when you crank it too.

Nice one on picking up an S470, welcome to the club :) How are you liking it? Get some pics up!

Actually, I just found my other one:

Been playing for about 13 years. Current guitar collections is (small!)...

Yamaha F-310 acoustic

Image

Cheap and cheerful, my first ever guitar still going strong!

Yamaha Pacifica 312-Mk II

Image

I've got a soft spot for "yam yams"... just think they're great quality guitars for the price. Never lets me down!... and this one looks superb (photo doesn't do it justice!)

Raimundo 104-M

Image

My latest purchase (about 3 years ago), Spanish guitar sounds just how a classical guitar should sound... like warm honey! 8)

Other kit... got a small practice amp (Fender Champ 110) doesn't get a great deal of use. Also got a couple of multi-fx pedals (Korg and Zoom) but likewise these don't get much use these days, even though the Korg pedal in particular is a lovely little bit of kit.

Fave guitar brand has to be Paul Reed Smith. If I had that kind of money to spend on guitars, I'd certainly buy a PRS... I don't so I can't, although I have seen a few PRS at more realistic prices recently. "Paw" were one of my fave bands when I was a teenager and their PRS sounded censored on!... a great sound whether it's a "full-on" rock or more "jangley" sound.

If I had to pick a fave guitarist, I'd probably go for Dave Murray (Iron Maiden) but that would mean leaving out a lot of other great guitarists, so I won't pick one!
GAME OVER YEEEAAAHHH!

Upload to Photobucket
Then use tags to post (or simply copy the code that Photobucket gives you after you upload).

I'm really GASing for one of those Vipers now... ok and all the others, but at least that's a bit closer to my price range :D

Been playing since 1989, nearly 20 years.

I have an electric guitar, plus Sonar 6 Producer Edition on the PC along with Creative Labs X-FI Pro, bought simply as it had the asio socket to plug my guitar directly into.

Having said that, that expensive setup was sheer over-indulgence on my part - I just enjoy all the effects of Sonar and laying down tracks now and then, as my first love is acoustic guitar.

I have a Garrison G40. I love writing my own stuff, but also enjoy playing Simon & Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell and others along that line.

Just noticed that Viper 400 I wouldn't mind getting is listed at €666 on the site I normally buy stuff from at the moment

Well, it is a bit of a beast.

Oh, pretty bad/interesting story I read today too: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/for ... ?t=1877861. That's a severe pasting it got!

How long have you been playing?
About 8 years now

What guitar(s) do you own?
Just a Martin Grand Concert Electroacoustic at the moment

What about equipment?
Does a stand count?

What was your first ever guitar, and do you still own it?
Squire Strat in black - and no, I traded it in for a sunburst Strat, then finally sold it to a friend at school when I got my Epi Dot 335.

What's your favourite guitar maker & guitar?
Always a close run thing between Fender and Gibson for me - If I had to choose right now, I'd go for Gibson because I love Slash style Les Pauls. But then I love the beautiful Stratocaster shape too - oh damn, I'm in a pickle now :(

What genres of music do you like playing most?
Rock, Indie and Folk.

Are you in a band?
Not at the moment, haven't been for a little while now - though when I am in one I'm usually frontman and tend to play rhythm rather than fretwanker.

What guitar(s) do you have serious GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) for at the moment? (and might realistically own)
Too many to list here.

Which do you dream to fork out for once you win the lottery?
Every variation of the Stratocaster ever made - lol. Hmmm... perhaps my fave is Fender then...

Who is your favourite guitarist? (other than yourself!)
Slash (the almighty) :)

Got any guitar-related stories?
Probably. But instead I'll just list what guitars I've had:
Squire Strat (Black)
Squire Strat (Brown Sunburst)
Epiphone Dot 335 (Cherry Red)
Fender Stratocaster USA '91 (Light Blue)
Brawley Threat (Flame Maple Orange)
Martin Grand Acoustic (Solid Spruce Top)
