The Smiths owe Floyd nothing.
Sorry man, but your wrong... Without the Floyd there would be no Smiths, Without the genius of Mr Barrett there would be no Morrissey, Although I will give Ant Johann, you got me with that one. :)
Why? You can have absolutely no evidence to suggest that. You might aswell say without Mr Blobby there would be no Eminem.

Overrated tosh!

About a year ago, I would have said possibly Metallica, Foo Fighters or Faith No More, but then I heard Coheed & Cambria. Absolute genius. They take a couple of listens but then: BOOM! Hooked.

And Opa, they do owe Pink Floyd a lot (structure and style (almost Prog rock, and lovers of the concept album), if not actual musical content), so you're right on this one, at least

I can see the link there: Both look ridiculous, sound terrible and are bought by kids falling for the marketing.

Has to be Brian Wilson/The Beach Boys. And no Floyd in sight!

If anything, Floyd owe a debt to Brian. If it wasn't for Brian, the Beatles would not have released (the over-rated) Sgt Pepper which practically every luminary in the music biz salivates over. Brian did what it took 5 Beatles (that includes Sir GM) to do and whose music remains as timeless as ever.

Floyd, on the other hand, are a bloated, over-rated bunch of hasbeans who are remembered solely for the Brick In The Wall single and the Dark Side album. Gimme Emerson, Lake and Palmer anyday. :P

If not Brian, I would be choosing Frank Zappa (who also owes nothing at all to Floyd!) or Sigue Sigue Sputnik (again, no Floyd!!. Inspiration instead from New York's Suicide and Elvis) as my fave.

I'm going to go for Richard Thompson, the finest guitarist and singer/songwriter the UK has produced in many a year.

I'm going to side with the Floyd = overated tosh.

Never really 'got' Pink Floyd - I do think they are quite overrated and the people I know who are into them, also like to 'smoke'. :)

I always thought they were more New York Dolls.

Surprised nobody's posting earlier acts. I expected at least one Elvis fan (my brother's one - even had an 'Elvis' wedding while in Hawaii on an Elvis fan club tour).

No Rock n Roll or Jazz fans? Very little in the way of electronica? Nothing classical bar my semi-serious post?

Not sure I have a single favourite. Jarre is up there, but it doesn't really compare against Otis Redding.

As far as rock 'n' roll is concerned: Remember Richie Valens. Dead at 17, but his music lives on...

I loved the Beatles, yeah yeah yeah. I love Brian Wilson too, and I think Pet Sounds was better than any Beatles album, but The Beatles were more of a band. The talent was spread more evenly. And besides, The Beatles didn't have Superjerk Mike Love.
