Chess

Post by English Invader » Sun Mar 29, 2020 6:09 am

One of the ways in which I'm getting through the CV pandemic is a new-found obsession with the best game ever invented. I'm not much good at it but I'm enjoying an ongoing battle of wits with the level 2 game engine on this app:
https://www.chess.com/play/computer

I grew up in a chess playing family but my father and my brother just seemed to have an instincitive understanding for the strategies of the game that eluded me. Now seems as good a time as any to try and do something about that. At the moment, whenever I think I've come up with a winning strategy, the computer invariably comes up with something that forces me to compromise everything to get my king out of check and everything goes to pot from there but I'm having fun.

Anyone else play chess here?

I just won my first game but the computer beat me again in the rematch.

I started up again a while ago (even had a thread here), I don't currently play on Chess.com though.
I will occasionally play myself on a physical board as I have several sets including a small travel one that I can sit on my knee on the bad days, wouldnt mind one of those old chess computers though.

Frequently

It's more to try and get my brain to work through the meds fog more, I can't always guarentee how I'll be from one day to the next and thats not exactly fair on another player to sometimes wait a week or two before I'm ok to go again.

In some ways, it's actually more challenging to play a computer program because there is no human error (a computer is never going to forget about that bishop in the corner).

I love chess. My official ELO rating is 1680 which puts me in the category of 'average club player' broadly speaking. Not a day goes by where I have at least one game on Chess24.
