Well, it's a shame. I am a huge Hubbard fan but don't feel this is the best way to celebrate his work. Big missed opportunity in my opinion.
Re: Project Hubbard (Rob Hubbard Kickstarter) is live!
Well here's a question in that case. What do you feel would be the best way to celebrate his work? There are still 24 days left and Chris already has some things in the works which will be added soon. Maybe others feel the same way, and there are things that could be added which would appeal to different subsets of Hubbard fans?
Re: Project Hubbard (Rob Hubbard Kickstarter) is live!
The creator is Chris Abbott. His company High Technology Publishing has administered the rights for Rob's music for nearly twenty years. C64 Audio is one part of that, the label responsible for publishing remix CDs and hence his Kickstarter username. The Laird wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2017 12:20 pmIn that case I am even less interested as listening him play music on other instruments doesn't interest me either.
When the Kickstarter creator is called C64 Audio and the first line not only mentions SID music but also a C64 cart I think it's pretty easy to form an impression of what its about. So perhaps it's misleading and they haven't helped themselves much.
Can we can the negativity? The project as a whole celebrates ALL of Rob's career.

It would appear that this Laird character is just a C64 hater. Anyone that has any interest in chiptunes would recognise the C64 as one of the best music producing machines in 8 bit history. Maybe he should start a kickstarter for Hubbards Atari music? Wouldn't put the target too high though!merman wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2017 12:47 pmThe creator is Chris Abbott. I have every right to have an opinion on this and every right to express my thoughts on it. I haven't been overly negative I have just stated that it doesn't interest me.merman wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2017 12:47 pmCan we can the negativity? The project as a whole celebrates ALL of Rob's career.
And in my opinion this doesn't celebrate ALL of Rob' s career. If it did then my fondest memories of Rob would be in here and in fact NONE of them are. So there you go.
Re: Project Hubbard (Rob Hubbard Kickstarter) is live!
What I would have loved to have seen is a series of CDs with all his music on them, the original chiptunes, not remade stuff. And those CDs arranged by platform, so C64, A8, ST, Amiga etc.PaulEMoz wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2017 7:19 amWell here's a question in that case. Then some CDs that featured versions of his music for platforms that never got that time, for example SID rendition of Jet Set Willy and a POKEY version of One Man and His Droid.
Just dropping a few of my thoughts.
Re: Project Hubbard (Rob Hubbard Kickstarter) is live!
Firstly, you can label me like that if it makes you happy. But it clearly isn't true, my volumes of writing work prove that quite nicely. I'm just not a huge fan of the SID chip.Crusty Starfish wrote: ↑ It would appear that this Laird character is just a C64 hater. You clearly don't know much about the Atari scene though!
Re: Project Hubbard (Rob Hubbard Kickstarter) is live!
I believe there might be something in the works that covers the original pieces. Putting them all on CDs just wouldn't be practical though, there's far too much material. You're looking at hundreds of tunes with hours and hours of running time. I agree, a box set of Hubbard original music CDs would be a lovely thing to own, but God knows how much it would cost. The Laird wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2017 4:10 pmWhat I would have loved to have seen is a series of CDs with all his music on them, the original chiptunes, not remade stuff. If remakes aren't your thing, fair enough. Music is a very personal, individual thing. There have been some brilliant remakes in the last few years though, and for me it's great to hear those familiar tunes played by bands or orchestras, sometimes in the way they were originally hoped to have been played. Hopefully enough people will feel the same and will back it to some degree.
The book should be great, though...

Re: Project Hubbard (Rob Hubbard Kickstarter) is live!
It was done for Martin Galway, partly because the number of tunes was within a reasonable scope, and because Chris/Kenz/Boz had access to Martin's original C64 and SID chip, so the SID recordings were done essentially to record for posterity how Martin himself heard them when creating them, not how everyone else might have heard them due to the vast variations in SID filter and pass settings. Rob's original C64 is long gone, so such a preservation idea is out the window.PaulEMoz wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2017 4:31 pmI believe there might be something in the works that covers the original pieces. There's also a lot more material to consider. Knucklebusters, Kentilla and Arcade Classics alone would take up half a CD by themselves!

Why would that make me happy? Sorry, I am not aware of your 'volumes of writing' - what have you done that is C64 related? Genuinely interested. As for not being a fan of the SID chip, I find it rather strange as many of the Atari tunes I have heard over the years are just poorer versions of SID music. And after checking, some of the YouTube videos were yours. The Laird wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2017 4:14 pmFirstly, you can label me like that if it makes you happy. As for not knowing much about the Atari scene - well, I know a lot about the C64 scene and also do use the main Atari gaming forums (well, lurk).
It is odd that you say you haven't been overly negative - when you quite clearly have. Maybe for the sake of sanity you should move onto a topic that does actually interest you!

Re: Project Hubbard (Rob Hubbard Kickstarter) is live!
It'd come to a pretty substantial stack of CDs, but I'd be surprised if it cost more than making a bunch of remix albums, a book, a cartridge game, putting on a concert with the LSO, and the rest of the stretch goals. Still, it ain't my project and it's entirely down to those running the show to pick their own goals.Mayhem wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2017 7:12 amIt was done for Martin Galway, partly because the number of tunes was within a reasonable scope, and because Chris/Kenz/Boz had access to Martin's original C64 and SID chip, so the SID recordings were done essentially to record for posterity how Martin himself heard them when creating them, not how everyone else might have heard them due to the vast variations in SID filter and pass settings. Anyway, I'd be interested to know if there's a full tracklisting to the Hubbard '80 album yet, as I can't seem to find one on the crowdfunding page. That's the most interesting part of it to me, so it'd be good to know exactly what I'll be getting.

Honestly if you think I was overly negative then you must be pretty new to the internet.Crusty Starfish wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2017 9:45 pmWhy would that make me happy? I have been writing for Retro Gamer for about 6 years now and in that time I've written an awful lot of C64 related stuff.

Good question. I don't know that but I can ask Chris and see if he does.Matt_B wrote: ↑Anyway, I'd be interested to know if there's a full tracklisting to the Hubbard '80 album yet, as I can't seem to find one on the crowdfunding page. Six years! Blimey. That's a lot of issues for me to go hunting for your C64 related stuff. Could you point me in the right direction? I generally read the sections that I think I will find interesting, so obviously C64 related stuff will have been read. The Laird wrote: ↑Sat Oct 14, 2017 1:46 pmHonestly if you think I was overly negative then you must be pretty new to the internet.Crusty Starfish wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2017 9:45 pmWhy would that make me happy? What C64 articles did you write? Or are they just articles that mention something about the C64?
I've been through all of my 2011 & 12 issues so far, and unless I'm missing something, I cant find any C64 articles by you (or any articles by you in fact

Re: Project Hubbard (Rob Hubbard Kickstarter) is live!
Since I started writing for RG I've been in almost every issue so there are plenty there.
I haven't written any C64 specific articles but I have written plenty of articles on companies that very much specialised in C64 software such as Tronix, HES, Gamestar, Top Ten Software, Audiogenic, Sirius Software, Imagitec Design etc.
I've also written game specific articles too such as The Making Of Panther for example and helped out people such as Chris Wilkins, Paul Drury and Andrew Fisher with Commodore related stuff.
In short, it's really not hard to find.
