Poke was a standard command in most versions of BASIC to change a value in the computer's memory. So you could 'poke' a value into any location. This could, if you knew what you were doing, be used to poke the relevant numbers that represented commands and the values needed for their operation.

Typically, for something like an infinite lives cheat, they'd poke a zero value into the counter value, so instead of 'lives = lives - 1' when you die, it would end up as 'lives = lives - 0' for example.

There was a similar Peek command that could be used to read values too.

If the decrement value 1 was at memory location 65123, you could do something like 'Poke 65123, 0' to change it.

Peek 65123 would return the value 1 or zero before and after.

Cheers, literally have never heard an explanation for this before.
