Rhyl Sun Center and other relics

Post by stayAwhile » Wed Jul 05, 2017 1:37 pm

just found out the Rhyl sun center has been demolished and the Rhyl sky tower decomissioned with this and the closure of ocean beach fun fair whats left for rhyl as a seaside resort? theres the beach a few seafront arcades and sovounier shops but I can't think of many attractions that make it rhyl anymore even terror tombs has gone. take southport for example yes pleasure land is gone but traveling fairs often use part of the site it also has a peir with a penny arcade and a tradtion seaside town feel.

I passed Rhyl tower the other week
I went round lat year, the indoor market is a depressing place of shut stores

they are tearing down a LOT of what made Rhyl different
Peabodys is being taken down,
The arcades are s**te

On the plus side, they have done up the sea front, they now have a major cycle path that goes right past Rhyl
It looks nice but has no soul

all thats left is bleak,
Bit like most coastal places

BLACKPOOL TOWER HAS A BLOODY B&M ON THE SAME BLOCK DAMN IT!!

alls the sun centre needed was a refurb mabie a few new features but it was alot better them most aquatic leisure centres. I never went on the tower but it seems like it was the last redeeming feature

They are hoping next year to run a Heyday in Rhyl weekend with attractions from the 50's and 60's. If it materializes it should be good.

Next to nothing from its heyday is left

Very true, that's why they are having to ship attractions in, so to speak. Vintage fairground for the weekend. Mods and Rockers Areas, etc. but they are at least trying to bring people back to the area.

nothing is as depressing as crewe though ... if you find a bus stop in crewe without dodgy looking people in you've mistaken a trolley bay for a bus stop

Haven't been to Rhyl for years - not since the demise of the arcades. I remember visiting the place in the early 00's and one arcade had Kung Fu Master, Double Dragon, Punch Out, Paper Boy all in a row for 10p a go each. A few arcades down, Circus Voltaire and Doctor Who pinball tables and yet another arcade had outside, a free to take Enduro Racer sit down cab, prob broke but still you won't see something like that anymore. I went back there the next summer and all the classic arcade pinballs and cabs had gone. Guess that Enduro Racer cab was a sign of things to come...
