Way of the Rodent

Post by Mayhem » Fri Jun 02, 2017 6:04 pm

Do you like retro? Do you like surreal and bizarre writing, like the strange step-sister to Digitiser? Then this project might be for you to recreate all the old content from WotR, a website that attracted over 100k reader for each issue...

WotR doesn't warrant comparison with Digitiser. Rodentia is so much better than that. I remember waiting for each new issue to come out. Nothing like it before or since. A mix of nostalgia, news, reviews and features, all on the nose with a dollop of humour that rarely felt out of place.

What happened to "They Were Our Gods"? That span from Rodent, but I sort of lost track of it.

I mention Digitiser because it's the closest thing anyone who hasn't heard of Rodent would possibly know, to give an idea of the humour and angle. AND the project has been supported by Paul Rose, Mr Biffo himself to boot :)

As for TWOG, that is Paul Morrison's own book project, and it's still slowly, very slowly coming along afaik heh...

Are there any samples of the work available online? I've never heard of WotR or Digitiser. The project sounds interesting but to back it I would need more to go on than former readers saying how great it is.

Due to the hack, there's stuff still available via the WayBackMachine, but I'm seeing if something can be put together for viewing to give people a flavour...

Paul Rose, aka Mr Biffo, has backed the project btw.

To be fair, Way of the Rodent never compared itself to Digitiser, nor claimed to live up to it. It was proudly its own thing, and it's very flattering that people thought so highly of it.

Well, it's still going, and thanks for your interest. Progress is slow but steady. Writing narrative for 40 interviews is very time consuming with a full-time job keeping me out of the house for up to 13 hours a day, five days a week and I have kids too. There is constant progress being made though and I have someone on board to do graphics/layout so keep an eye out. I've also been working on something else, a C64-specific book that I started during periods of writer's block with my main project. That one is almost finished...

Cheers Paul. Let us know when its time to order those. Anything from the WotR crew is pretty much an instabuy from me.

I'll be sure to do that, no worries.

Very nice to hear you liked Rodent so much. It was always a joy to write for. Looking back through the articles on the Wayback Machine link is great fun!

Maybe Halcyon's problem are the few articles that I wrote for Rodent

(admittedly the C64 vs Spectrum piece was a classic)

To be fair he has a problem with most things people like, he just revels in being antagonistic.

I have never heard of this, but feel like I somehow should have

I did frequently refer to WotR when it was live, e.g.
