console battle QUARTER FINAL R1 ATARI 2600 VS MASTER SYSTEM

Post by RodimusPrime » Mon May 08, 2017 10:41 am

So far

The master system has beaten the NES and COMMODORE C64GS
And the ATARI 2699 HAS beaten the COLECOVISION and MAGNAVOX

So who wins the first QF. MASTER SYSTEM VS ATARI 2600

For me its a close thing, still remember playing Centipede and moon patrol with my sister, but Playing Double dragon and shinobi on my cousins MS just edges it for me.

2600 for me. I really didn't like the Master System.

2600 for me, loved that machine.

Never had a Master System but never really got into it in emulation at all

2600 for me, as I don't have very much nostalgia for the otherwise excellent Master System.

Has to be the VCS, too many classics to ignore. Also although the graphics and sound aren't the best , the systems delivers playability galore. There is no single player games on the MS that rivals Star Raiders, and there is no multiplayer game that rivals Warlords or Combat.

See its all about preference, To me nothing on the 2600 beats completing Double Dragon in 2 player, playing Shinobi, or discovering the world of Wonderboy the dragons trap.

I think a lot depends on what you grew up with. I would quite happily go back and play many of the VCS games I played in my youth, but when it ones to the MS I'd rather play the MD which to me is simply a MS but better.

Totally agree. The 2600 was the first console I ever played so back then it was an amazing experience seeing all the games for it.

Never got into the master system as when it was out me and all my friends were still playing on our computers. Didn't know one person with a master system

Never owned a real VCS, only a clone.

For me, it has to be the original blue sky gaming console, the Sega Master System. So many great games and a real step up from the 8 bit home computers. In 3D too!

I grew up with the VCS but I'm the opposite of you. I've no nostalgic ties to it at all. Even when it was current it was a weak compromise for what was in the arcades. It's an appalling system full of appalling games and it always was with hindsight. Gaming didn't get good in the home until I got my Spectrum. I voted for the Master System because it still has games on it that I'd play today. I wouldn't touch anything on the 2600 with a bargepole.
If it's slower than me, dumber than me and it tastes good ... tough titty.

Another toughie personally.

1) The 2600 was the first console I had to play on, passed on from my older brothers.
2) The Master System was the first console I could call mine.

If you take the objective view of the impact each had at the time I first used it, it is a close run thing.
- The Atari had some really playable games single and multiplayer, in short bursts it would edge it.
- The Master System has a great setup, simple controls, cute cards!, and some immersive games for the time. So for longer term play sessions this would win.

What would I play today.... Master System, possibly more nostalgia involved, but also games I would enjoy more.

...Also that my house was towards the end of the school cross country route. We would run there first, get some quick world soccer matches in and gradually join back in the route, when the quicker runners has gone past. Until the PE teacher followed the route in his car and caught us. Lined up outside the Music block and rewarded with a set of thick ears, not likely these days .

^When did you get your master system ?

Like i say i didnt know anyone back then with one, everyone had a home computer and didnt have a console till perhaps the NES or when the Megadrive came out, then in the late 80's lots of us moved over from our 8 bits to a console (or amiga).

I remember seeing a console back in the 80's (NES ?) and as a kid being shocked how expensive the games were as i was used to much cheaper prices and (ahem) tape to tape copies ;)

It was latter part of High School so probably late 1988, my brothers were much older than me 13+years and joined the forces at 16. So I was the youngest and virtually an only child (at home) I guess somewhat spoilt! Did not own many games 3-4 I think, use to actually rent them quite a bit from a local computer/video store.

TBH It was unusual to have a console amongst my group of friends as was in those days. Most had a spectrum or C64 in the house. My Dad did buy an Electron to try and help with the accounts by "Computing" , before deciding he was to old for that S***. (He co-owned a small shop for a while)

The Master System. I knew quite a few Spectrum owners who moved to it. Afterburner on it was really good.
