Should this not be in the main section?
Anyway, GX4000 is definitely the better machine, at least it improved the hardware.

Thought that it may annoy people to clog up the main section. The Laird wrote:Should this not be in the main section?

What were the different specs? Did they make the GX4000 more powerful than the standard 464?The Laird wrote:Should this not be in the main section?

Even the bog standard Amstrad CPC can do things like what are shown below

The GX4000 has hardware sprites, better hardware scrolling, DMA sound, 32 colours onscreen before any tricks are used, a palette of 4096 colours and SCART output. Sprites can use 16 colours in up to 640x200 pixels.
The hardware in the Amstrad GX4000 is also used in the Amstrad plus series. The few games that used the machine well, were early games that still only scratched the surface of what was possible

I'm going to have to pick the GX4000 - A shock considering I'm a Commodore 64 fanboy! While both consoles were on life support even before release, at least Amstrad tried with including joy-pads, updated specs, an exclusive game pack in and that it looked a little like a snow-speeder. The GS was just an ugly brick of a console, which could play all C64 carts even ones which required a keyboard(!)

Seriously though, compare Navy Seals and Pang on the two systems and you will see that the real dead end was the C64GSmerman wrote:C64GS has some great games too... Navy Seals, Pang![]()
Seriously, the GS helped create some amazing carts that also work on the standard C64.
Whereas the GX4000 and Plus range were a bit of a dead end...

Games like Navy Seals and Pang were actually far superior on the Amstrad machine.
As for dead ends, the C64GS had no upgraded hardware at all, stuck with one fire button, and released games on cart that were unplayable as they still required keyboard input despite the system having no keyboard. Which made a large selection of carts unplayable as you could not get past the title screen.
At least the Gx4000 had hardware upgrades, shipped with a 2 button controller, and games that could actually be played.
as bad as the Gx4000 was, it was several jumps ahead in quality to the C64s.

The Commodore 64GS is a total garbage machine for all the reasons stated, I remember one of my mates getting hold of one, and struggling for ages to convince us it was any good, the final straw was him getting The Terminator game and not even being able to start it as it needed the F1 key, that was obviously missing, we had zero fun playing on that piece of crud, it was nothing we had not played before on his brothers C64.
The GX4000, while far from a good machine at least had some half decent games to play on it, Burnin' Rubber, Pang, Robocop 2 (despite being way too hard), Switchblade, some tennis game once you got the hang of it, so it is an easy win for the GX4000 for me.
