Soldiers - the ones you eat with eggs

Post by necronom » Fri Dec 30, 2016 3:34 pm

So, a debate is going on here. Me, my Brother and Dad are one one side, and my Brother's wife is on the other side.

The question:

Do you have soldiers as bread or toast?

Bread. I don't even think toast would be absorbent enough, would it?

Toast.
There is no such thing as a "bread soldier". To be a soldier it must be made of toast. The soldier must be rigid for dipping in runny yolk.
That there are people who eat boiled goggies with strips of raw bread shows just what a mess this country is in.

Bread. A toasted soldier is simply dead. Tasty, but dead.

And toasted is pretentious, too. So say all of us.

"...And so say all of us, and so say all of us
A toasted soldier is pretentious
a toasted soldier is pretentious
a toasted soldier is pretentious...
And so say all of us"

'Nuff.

Toast of course. But I do have my toast very light.

Either. Which isn't an option on the poll, but I've had them both ways, i'm not fussy, I'll eat what's put in front of me.

Toast or bread - you peasants! It's asparagus for me! I'm joking. I'd have to go with toast, as bread would go to soft with the runny yolk liquid; unless, it's some rustic type real bread(like sourdough or ciabatta). I'd still trump for toast though.

Until last night I'd never heard of toasted soldiers. It had never crossed my mind that it was even a thing. We looked it up and the wiki page says"
"It seems likely that it was either popularised or invented in 1965 in a series of TV Commercials for eggs starring Tony Hancock and Patricia Hayes."

That shows bread as the original soldiers:

So it seems we were doing it the proper way, and the "toasted soldiers" brigade are the unskilled ones doing it on "beginner" setting. The bread way you have to wrestle with the bread to stop it dripping on yourself. True skill :D

We were thinking it was a regional thing, but it appears from a Facebook post someone did, that it is quite random.

I may give the toasted option a go, as it does seem like it could be quite good, though it's been a while since I last had an egg with soldiers.

Brown bread (just brown no seeds or oats or whatever), heavily buttered, no crusts. Only sane option people!

Shows how useless wiki is. Can't even differentiate between bread fingers and toasted soldiers.

Generally, toasted, but sometimes I like to shake things up and have one slice untoasted and one slice toasted because thats the kind of trail-blazer that I am. Providing the egg yolk is nice and runny, having a floppy untoasted soldier is quite pleasant :)

I'm more curious about quantity. I tend to just have one egg, and two slices of bread. Some people I notice have two eggs and 3+ slices of bread. Fat gits. One egg is high enough in cholesterol as it is, two is overkill.

I bet dprinny has 4 eggs, and 17 slices of toast.

The world no longer makes any sense to me, Today I found out that people use untoasted bread with runny eggs.

Soldiers should be toasted, I can't fathom why anyone would not do so.
