What did you want to be when you grew up?

Post by TheDude18 » Fri Aug 26, 2016 11:50 am

My stepson has recently turned 15 and doesn't have a scooby doo on what he would like to do as a career. It's a hard time for a teenager when they finally realize that school wont last much longer and some growing up and decision making will soon be common place. It's hard enough to pick your subjects a year and a half prior when your even younger, but will only one year left in school it can be quite daunting, especially if your changing your mind on a daily basis.

I found my choice easy - I wanted to be a fireman, as long as I could remember. So much so, not only was I seriously keeping fit, I was keeping in touch with the lads at the local fire station, calling in on a regular basis and so on. I called in once for a chat with the senior officer, everything going well until on the way out I was asked about any medical issues. At the time I had none. Then I jokingly mentioned my (what I thought was petty) my colour blindness. The mood changed, I was stopped in my tracks, my chosen career was over before it started. Gutted.

So, what did you want to be when you grew up? And did you achieve it?

I wanted to be a Ninja Turtle. Then, at the age of 16, when I was told it was not possible to become a full-time Ninja Turtle I had to radically alter my plans.

I've never had a clear direction on what I wanted to do, I stumbled upon working in hotels as a part-time money earner and quickly rose up to a customer service manager at a large hotel group. It's fun, challenging work but it's not what I planned (or, truth be told, want) to do with my life.

After watching the stallone movie over the top.Which is about a long distance lorry driver who arm wrestles. That is all I wanted to do.Driving up and down route 66 in my rig eating monster steaks at truck stops and arm wrestling in bars for beer money. When the carreers officers came to school to ask what we wanted to do he must of thought I was mad.I even done a massive project on it.I never even learnt to drive in the end did eat a few steaks though.

I wanted to be Ian Rush. Still do - I'm only 34, I've still got time!

I still don't know.

When I was a kid, I was good at techy drawing so thought I might become a draughtsman. By fluke, I slid sideways into doing exactly that a couple of years later, having taught myself to work CAD during lunchbreaks at work.

Man, that gets old fast, so repetitive.

All I really knew (and still do) is that I really didn't want a physical job. My dad dug holes for a living and I'd no inclination to follow that.

From the moment I used a C64 at school when I was 8, I wanted to work with computers and now I write software.

Sure, I'd rather be working on games, but hey you can't have everything.

i wanted to be a radio dj, when i discovered that was going to be difficult/impossible, i decided i wanted to run a specialist travel agency for people wanting to travel to america.

long story short.... nearly 20 years in customer service, enforced career change due to ill health, now working as an auditor, which i really enjoy

It saddens me now thinking back that at 15 or so you could be potentially ANYTHING you wanted to be if you just made a decision and worked hard at it.

But you don't see it at the time

that wasnt the case for what i wanted to do, a lot was and still is, pure luck.

I nearly set up an internet radio station, but the regulations here are downright prohibitive, i would have to log every song i played (there would be 3000 a month), plus how many people listened and pay very precise royalties for each one.

Plus my 'realistic' choice was running a travel agency, which was great in theory, but I couldn't even get a job in one as most places didnt recognise the qualifications as abta recognised experience (some places did, they had to have someone with 2 years abta recognised experience on the premises at all times, so if someone didn't have enough they wouldn't get a job), other places were not interested because i am a man- how many male travel agents did you see in the 90s?

My career now was never the sort of thing a school careers teacher would ever say would be an option, but I really enjoy it.

I once got thrown out of a careers advice lesson for saying I wanted to be a lumberjack. Mind you the previous lesson I'd told her I wanted to be a professional darts player, and before that a cushion tester.

I hated our careers advisor because if you didn't know at 15 what you wanted to do for the rest of your life she thought you were thick.
