A housecoat is one of those padded, probably pink, insulated long jackets old ladies wear. Dressing gowns are thick soft cotton and bath robes are made of the same fluffy material as towels.

Dressing Gown or Bath Robe, either are acceptable for me although dressing gown makes far more sense personally, but a house coat is a totally different thing, her family are confused

It looks like she's signed up here and got a member of her family to vote, too.

House coats are worn by men.
Dressing gowns are worn by women.

Simple.

Is it like a lab-coat? Never seen or heard of one round my way.

After reading through this thread. My wife is now frantically googling house coats in one last feeble attempt to justify her fuckedupness.

She is not having much success.

House coat? New one on me.

Always been a dressing gown down our way (not that I have one of course  ) but if we are in a hotel which have them in the room, they suddenly become 'bath robes'

Housecoats are something housewives of old used to wear, they are thinner jackets meant to protect ones clothes while doing housework and keep you warm.
Dressing gowns are robes worn when one is not dressed and needs extra warmth, smoking jackets are somewhat simular but can be worn over clothes to protect them from falling ash, again bath robes are simular but are made from towel matrials to dry the wearer after bathing.

In short if you can freeball in it its not a house coat.
