Sad day for comedy in general - always the good ones , yet John Culshaw still walks the earth.

RIP Rick , you made my youth that much funnier.

Really saddened to hear about the death of Rik Mayall. Through The Young Ones, The New Statesman and Bottom, he was just brilliant. We can't not pay tribute to his vocal performance in Hogs of War as well - it was impeccable.

R.I.P.

When was the Young ones originally on tv ? Was it 1982/3 ?

I remember as a kid being 'allowed' to watch that as i was very young and there was obviously a lot of adult jokes in it, but it was funny as anything and my parents let me watch it. Good times back then

That has made my day become a complete bottom burp. There are loads of famous people I'd prefer to pop their cloggs before him. Sad day indeed

What the...? Bolt from the blue, this. No specific reason given yet for his untimely passing, but quad bike incident is referenced.

He had many, many more years ahead of him as a genuine, raucous comedy talent. Never saw much of him after Statesman, though. The Young Ones is my fave - cried with laughter many times. (That's the end of my hope of a follow-up called The Old Ones.) He was always over-the-top, sly, caustic, on edge - so funny.

RIP

What the...?!?!

I just saw this one the front page of a news website and literally shouted that out loud, I just couldn't believe it :(

I used to watch reruns of 'The Young Ones' when I was a kid (probably around the mid-late 90's) and thought it was bloody hilarious.

Yet another legend lost this year :(

That's sad news indeed. I can't imagine it had anything to do with the quad incident as that was well over a decade ago.

I think The Young Ones, Bottom and maybe The New Statesman would go down has his greatest performances, but I've also got fond memories of him as Kevin Turvey from a Kick Up The Eighties. The last thing I saw him in was Man Down, which wasn't great, although he was pretty much its saving grace.

I was shocked when I heard this. I didn't realise he was in a bad way.

I liked The Young Ones a lot, and Bottom even more. He taught me the best chess move, too:

and the really exciting version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey:
