Actually, if there was one area where men were recruited in equal terms, it was the British Army. Yes, it did have Indian and black soldiers in the 19th century, and earlier than that even. So the presence of a black soldier in the story wasn't really out of place for the time in question.

Yeah, I get that but they would have been kept within their own units, and certainly wouldn't have had London accents. If we're going to start picking up on anachronisms in Doctor Who then we'll be here all day, but it did seem a bit incongruous as Antirad said in terms of how they treated 'Friday'.

Thanks for that little history lesson. Were they treated as equals? I'm guessing the common soldier wouldn't much care who had his back, but I can imagine the officers being less accomodating.
