I never understood why they did the whole sex change thing for the Master(to the Mistress), when there was a perfectly decent(and probably with a lot of story potential - as there were only two stories in the old series) female villain in the form of the Rani. I think the producer said that he didn't like the character. It seems like a missed opportunity to me.

A shame that he never got the opportunity. I know he did the TV film and I know there's the audio stories and so on; I also remember that the BBC re-imagined "Shada" with him in it, on their website as a flash animation story. At least, it was good that he got a part(albeit small) in the 50th anniversary.

I don't think people would be happy if The Joker was suddenly a woman, or Bond, or Dracula, or Sherlock Holmes, or they turned Ripley or Sarah Connor into a man. Why do people have to mess with things? If you want something different, make up a new character.

I agree if that's all they're doing it for & it's someone terrible then that is indeed a pathetic sop, on the other hand if it's a decent actress that turns out to be brilliant in the role then I really don't see the problem.

I just found it pretty funny in a universe of infinate possibilities where Dr Who has been an old man, a young man, a thin man a fat man, Scottish at least twice and has a different gimmick each regeneration, that someone would be so precious if he wasn't played by a "white British male actor"
