Answering the phone.....

Post by tachi » Fri Mar 01, 2013 4:16 am

How do you answer your phone?
Is it a simple "Hello" or an elaborate "Good Morning, ** Speaking, how may I help you"?
I ask both out of idle interest and as I am a "Hello?" answerer but as I have now been unemployed for 4 months and (due to the financial year coming to an end) interest from businesses is scarce, I wonder if this is enough?
So, how do you answer your phone and how would you suggest I do so?

I did a secondment in recruitment a few years ago and a hello was fine just try to sound awake and alert when you answer the phone

At work: "Good morning/afternoon, >Company Name<" if I pick up an incoming call, "Hello, Ian speaking" if someone transfers a call to me.

At leisure: "Hello" (as chirpily as possible) for unidentified callers.

Or I may use one of the following if I know who's calling and they have a sense of humour:

"Hello, Chorley Banana Bending Factory, how may I bend your bananas today?"
"Hi, Ian can't come to the phone right now. This is his fridge. Speak slowly and I'll stick your message to me with one of these little magnet things."
(In a vey slow, low voice) "You raaaaaaang?"
"The Mad House, this is Mrs Whiplash, how can I dominate you?"
(Faux Chinese accent): "You wan' buy DVD?"

I always struggled not to laugh back in the days when the AOL helpline had to answer the phones with "Hello, this is >Name< at AOL, how can I enhance your online experience today?"

*Shudder*

When I worked at Virgin Media we had a premium line for a while and had to start each call:
"Hello, you're through to Tachi, just to advise you calls are charged at 50 pence per minute on Virgin and BT Lines, calls from mobiles and other supplies may be considerably more. I will advise upon 10 minutes and call you back at 20 minutes. Now can I please start with your name, postcode and account number".
That took nearly a minute.....50p.

My landline remains unplugged unless I want to call someone...
My comics blog (mostly lesser-known UK stuff from the 80s and 90s)

The only reason I have a land line now is for internet If I had my way there would never been a phone plugged in but Mrs Rocky is not happy with that

Just 'hello'

But it makes me laugh thinking back to the 80's, i think it was quite normal of parents to answer the phone like 'hello 790151 who is it please ?'

Used to make it much easier for spam callers to get your number

Personal calls I usually answer with "hello <mate/person's name/big boy/nob'ed> etc.

Work phone "Hello it's Gordon"

Other work phone "Hello <business name>"

It winds me up how many people here in Yorkshire answer the phone with "now then..."

Personal calls - just 'hello?' (making sure I raise the pitch of my voice on the last syllable to suggest a question!)
Work - '<Department name>, Andy speaking' (I never get calls from people in external organisations)
