Five Best Music Videos

Post by Spector » Sun Jan 13, 2013 10:15 am

Watching VH1 at a friend’s house a few days ago reminded me of music video's golden era, so I’ve decided to select my five favourites. I’d like to hear other top fives from the experts on this forum (ie, people over 30).

1. Smooth Criminal – Wacko Jacko: You can’t take choreography further than this one.
2. Rapture – Blondie: Dame Debbie Harry’s finest performance.
3. Once In A Lifetime – Talking Heads: Weird but brilliant, Dumbarton’s David Byrne plays the head slapping suburban nutter.
4. Take On Me – A-ha: Imaginative use of the rotoscope technique.
5. Love in The First Degree – Bananarama – The one on the left.

What other music video masterpieces do fans of this, er, "maligned" genre think should be in there?

Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice.

Not only is Christopher Walken great in the video, the fact he agreed to do it all is awesome in itself!

1. Thriller - Good choreography from the dancing zombies and the horror themed video adds panache to Jacko's splendid musical tune.

2. Sledgehammer - Plasticine fantastic! Peter Gabriel's tune gets the Aardman Animation and Brother Quay's treatment.

3. Like a Virgin - Good use of the Venice locales, the man in the lion's mask and Madge in that long flowing white dress add to the ironic imagery of the song.

4. Money For Nothing - The early use of computer animation adds to the iconic tune about consumerism.

5. Bohemian Rhapsody - Clever editing techniques in such an early video. Look out for a nod to the old Rank Oraganisation as well.

Seeing as I would have had Sledgehammer five times, now it's already been said I'm actually going to have to put some thought into this!

Birdhouse In Your Soul - They Might Be Giants
Just like the song, completely off its head but all the better for it.

Innuendo - Queen
I'm fond of all the mix of art and animation styles in this one.

Cry - Godley & Creme
Yes, you can see the joins these days but there'd never been anything like it before.

Learn To Fly - Foo Fighters
Probably the funniest video ever made.

Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
Disturbing and brilliant in equal measure.

Apparently they never finished fully rendering the animation scenes due to the processing time it took back then, and if you look closer, you can tell? I haven't seen this myself, but it makes sense with all these daisy-chained C64's chugging away at 1Mhz, it was always going to take a helluva lot of time! Still, at least there was no colour clash!

Yep, it pre-dated "Black Or White" by six years, and at first you're fooled into thinking it's the same technique. Also, with Trevor Horn producing some Frankie-esque keyboard flourishes, I think the song is marvellous too.

5) Junior Senior - Move Your Feet
Seriously, as retro heads this should be one of the first we think of. 8-bit style graphics, catchy song.

4) SoundGarden - Black Hole Sun
Ever since seeing this on Beavis and Butthead, I'm quite frankly mesmorised by the whole thing, in a kind of "What the hell is going on" kind of way.

3) Michael Jackson - Black or White
Some of Jacko's vids are incredible, and I know most people pick Thriller, but I personally liked this one, mainly for the famous "face-morphing" bit at the end. My only criticism would be that the end of the video bears NO reference to the beginning... just a sequence of special effects, really. Still good, though.

2) Charlotte Church - Moodswings (Come at me Like That)
Alright, so it's got the gorgeous Charlotte Church in it, which is a big plus, but the actual video itself is really cleverly made, and the song itself is pretty meaningful to me.

1) Queen - The Miracle
Genius idea, executed perfectly. Finding 4 kids who look (and move) like the members of Queen, and have them do the music video for you.
