For me, the best thing to do is just find one of the many multiplayer games, sit down with some strangers and have a laugh.

I predict I'll be spending a lot of time at the Chompy Chomp Chomp game :D

Oh I agree SirClive... I will be showing a lot of interest in the exhibits and understand what your saying. I cant wait to try out some pinball's and see upcoming titles etc aswell as hanging around the replay area and meeting peeps.

Also are there any tips on how to get the best out of the event?
The main thing is not to be afraid to stop people and talk to them.

Walk up to a system, say hi, ask how they came to be there, any games they recommend having a look at etc, maybe mention how you found out about the event, the mag and whatnot.

We've all been novices at some point, but you'll come away having had a much better time if you've made some acquaintances along the way.

At something as big as these Expos there will be lots of people who don't know one another, so its always good to have a head to head on a game.

The same goes for the celebs, they're (mostly) normal people like us.

Oh, and enter the compos. Doesn't matter if you're no good at the genre, there are plenty of us who just do it for a laugh and get slaughtered in the early rounds, but once im a while we'll get jammy wins. Its all just for fun (and charidee of course).

If you're there for the weekend, you'll want to meet up with people for a beer and/or a meal after anyway no doubt.

As for name badges, a plain old sticky label with your name or forum on can be an icebreaker.

^Nice post.

I remember the first retro show i went to, was a bit weird going up to complete strangers asking if theyre 'fuzzyduckie' from the forum or that. Seriously you know what i mean.

Theres no 'cliques' or that, its just difficult sometimes finding people at a show this large so some groups tend to stick together a bit. You'll meet a lot of good people at the show, difficult to remember everyones name when you go back to the forum after the weekend.

Been to a fair few of these now and have never come away thinking people were rude or that, a big friendly bunch so dont feel afraid to just ask/say hello etc (To the newbie not you Antiriad !)

Utter garbage, I'm in the über-exclusive "gang of thirty". There's always at least half an hour's queue to speak to any of us & if you don't approach us in the correct manner you get a punch in the nose.*

* I may have made that up.

Joking aside I love these retro gaming events & I like to think I've made some great friends through them.

Turning up on your own is probably the best way. I went to Replay last year with a bunch of old schoolfriends & while I had a fantastic time, I feel I didn't get much time speaking to the fellow forum members & regulars as I'd have liked. Then again the larger the event (& they don't come much larger than this one!), the harder it is to find specific people.

I reckon in general these big events are perfect for meeting new people & the smaller ones are perfect for getting to know people.

Hope you have an absolute blast!

My plan is to turn up by myself and see what happens,

I don't post here much but one of you guys (robert hazelby) helped me with completing a collection of games many years ago, and ive bought the mag since issue 1 so I feel partly part of the family ;-)

Some of us are staff at the event too, so ask the staff if they are RG guys:)
I'll see if I can grab a roll of sticky labels and brings couple of marker pens.....
It needs a personal feel I think - and name badges in the retro area is the way to go. Maybe remove them when going into the modern play area so you don't look like some weird geek/dork/etc
