C++, you have my condolences. There is nothing worse than working on someone else's C++ code.

At least it's not Visual Basic.

The people who have taken me on, for one. They also want me to brush up on C# which I've not used before. I've heard it has a lot in common with Java though?

Man, Vb is very old. C languages are the standard these days. No suprise you gotta brush up your c#... haven't programmed in that ina few years though

I still use VB as the code-behind for ASP .NET at work but really ought to find the time to brush up on my old C++ and use C# instead.

Functional programming's where it's at, let's hear it for Haskell and F#.

Haskell? Thought that was just an academic-type language, remember using it at Uni.

Whatever fits the task, really. C# is my main language, though.

Haskell is just a jumped-up version of Forth with trees instead of a linear stack anyway.

C# came out of the falling out between Sun and Microsoft. Instead of using Java they decided to come up with their own language that had many of the same features. For the most part it's C++ with the potentially confusing & dangerous bits (pointer arithmetic, shadow variables, multiple inheritance, etc.) taken out, although there are a whole host of extra bolted-on features that you probably won't use much.

I'd think it's probably the language of choice for .NET development these days, although VB and C++ still receive equal support from Microsoft.

^ Cheers Matt, that's given me some confidence I'll be able to make the transition OK. Will take a proper look this weekend and see what's what.

The thing with C# is that the basics are so simple, but you'll never learn all the libraries. Which is probably okay, since it means you don't need to learn a lot of useless information to do what you want to do.

Unless you want an MS certification!
