iCade MAME cabinet - UPDATE with video

Post by boyo » Fri Jan 13, 2012 2:26 pm

Will document here how I get on doing it if anyone is interested :D

The iCade cost £39.99 in PC World - you pretty much have a mini cabinet, with joystick and buttons for next to nothing, all professionally cut and moulded!

Yeah, been trying to get one since before Xmas but the nearest available in a PC World/Currys is over 100 Miles away from me! None in stock anywhere near me..

Going to the NEC on Sunday so would it be worth me popping into your PC World to get one? How many were there left?

Oh and whch store was it?

That's the idea - will have a small PC in it - gonna replace the buttons and joystick - will use luminous buttons, add a marquee :D

I may hack a laptop, use the LCD screen and place on the front of the cab and the keyboard on the back - if you follow,

I have an 8" Car DVD LCD at the moment - I will see see if that fits ( I suspect it will). I suspect the 12" Laptop I currently have will not. Will let you know.

Here is an update and a video of the cab so far.

1) Ripped out the the bluetooth wiring from inside the control panel and installed a simple device from Ultacabs - http://www.ultracabs.co.uk

2) Owned a spare DVD screen that we had for the car - the main one had cracked and this one was just lying around (it's the one without the DVD player). The problem was it only had composite input, and the PC I wanted only has VGA output. So I bought a converter for £10 or so from E-bay and it works great:

3) I have ordered an amplifier and some speakers. There is sound coming from the TV now but not good enough for me. These are coming from Ultracabs:

4) Ordered some Acrylic from the marquee and front panel - these were from a service on E-bay and will be cut to size.

Going to use an external Laptop for now to run MAME - will replace with the Raspberry PI when I get one.

Here is a video of the cab working and where I am at with it:

Looks good. Nice and compact too!

Still awaiting your replies over at RF! :D

What version of MAME are you running?

Won't be using ultracabs. They are too unprofessional for me. I gauge a company by their customer service and communication. E-mailed them with a few questions, got one blase answer. Replied asking for specifics and still no reply to this day. Therefore i used gremlinsolutions via ebay and got the sticks, buttons (the concave ones i prefer rather than the convex ultracabs use) and the I-PAC for £84 delivered. A fair bit of wedge for a first try but still cheaper than Sanwa bits!

Will have to keep my eye out for one of these I-Cades as they look absolutely perfect for a small machine. Good job once again!

How about making the screen vertical?

You could get the PC to permanently display that way and it would work out great for shooters.

Whats the underside of the CP look like? (is it all wires connected to something that is a blu tooth thingy)
