Football transfers - bargain buys and flops

Post by thl » Wed Jun 01, 2011 5:12 pm

The transfer market has always been the place for football managers to invest on new players to strengthen the squad. Over the past years, there's been a lot of signings going on during those busy period as players are likely to be put on high value, becoming future star and even bring some experience to the team. Some are considered as bargains, some are likely to flop big time. Here are the list:

http://sport.uk.msn.com/football/back-o ... =156524261
http://sport.uk.msn.com/football/back-o ... =156519082

Looking at the signings that Liverpool had bought in the past, the ones that impressed me the most are:

John Aldridge (Oxford Utd, £750k)
John Barnes (Watford, £900k)
Peter Beardsley (Newcastle, £1.9m)
Patrik Berger (Borussia Dortmund, £3.25m)
Stig Inge Bjornebye (Rosenborg, £600k)
Dietmar Hamann (Newcastle, £8m)
Emil Heskey (Leicester City, £11m)
Jan Molby (Ajax, £225k)
John Arne Riise (Monaco, £4m)
Ian Rush (Chester City, £300K; Juventus, £2.7m)

And those who I consider the worst buys:

El Hadji Diouf (Lens, £10m)
Oyvind Leonhardsen (Wimbledon, £3.5m)
Erik Meijer (Bayer Leverkusen, Bosman)
Antonio Nunez (Real Madrid, Part Exchange)
Andrei Voronin (Bayer Leverkusen, Free)

And yet more footballers that failed to make an impact at other clubs:

Ade Akinbiyi (Wolves - Leicester City, £5m)
Bosko Balaban (Dinamo Zagreb - Aston Villa, £5.8m)
Jean Alain Boumsong (Rangers - Newcastle, £8m)
Duncan Ferguson (Everton - Newcastle, £7m)
Francis Jeffers (Everton - Arsenal, £8m)
Chris Sutton (Blackburn - Chelsea, £10m)
Massimo Taibi (Venezia - Man Utd, £4.5m)
Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Rangers - Arsenal, £8.5m)

For us (Forest) I would say that the biggest flop probably has to be Andrea Silenzi.

Signed for £1.8m (back in 1995) he played a total of 20 games in two seasons scoring just 2 goals, add on his wages and he was a waste of space and money.

A good signing for us was Stan Collymore, got him for an initial £2m, scored 41 in 65 over two seasons (including a promotion winning season) and got sold on for £8.5m.

Best for us (Brighton) by a mile was Gary Hart, who's played for us right up until the end of this season since we signed him in 1998 from Stanstead for £1000 and a set of kit! Since then he's made over 350 appearances and he's played pretty much everywhere except defence. True Albion legend and possibly the best bargain we'll ever have.

I was thinking the very same thing, astaroth.

I'd forgotten about Rebrov, or perhaps I'd consciously erased him from my memory. Did he ever actually score?

Rebrov was my main thought, but then i remembered Helder Postiga...............

Ok, i'm gonna spend some time making the ups and downs of Tottenhams spending history!

Best

Eric Cantona, Leeds-Man Ud for a cool £1.2m

Alan Shearer (imho the greatest striker of all time) Soton-Blackburn for a paltry £3.3m (although at the time it was a transfer record)

Peter Schmeichal (imho the greatest goalie of all time) Brondy-Man Utd £530k

Thierry Henry, Juve-Arsenal £11m

Worst

Shevchenko, Milan-Chelsea £30m

Robinho, Real Madrid-Man City £32.5m

Above all though - Ali Dia.

Look him up on t'internet. Signed by Graham Souness off the back of a fax from some-one claiming to be George Weah who was recommending his cousin to Southampton. Duly snapped up , he trned out to be possibly the worst player to ever grace a Premier League game with his presence.
Mr Flibble says...
"Game over , boys!"

Flops (Are you ready?)

David Bentley (17m)
Rebrov (11m)
Dos Santos (8.6m)
Postiga (6.25m)
Boateng (5.4m)
Vega (3.75m)
Mido (3.5m)
Leonhardsen (3.5m)
Rocha (3.3m)
Gunter (3m)
Davenport (3m)
Davis (3m)
Saib (2.3m)
Ghaly (2m)
Rasiak (2m)

From hereon in i'll not bother with transfer fees. Just think of them as waste of wages

Routledge, Gilberto, Dozzell, Taricco, Pamarot, Dominguez, Atouba (aaaaaaaawful!), Zamora, Korsten, Bunjevcevic, Gardner, Blondel, Acimovic, Tramezzani, Berti, Assou-Ekotto............

There, i think i got the majority of them.

Tops (all IMO)

Bale (10m. Lot of dough, but is that not a bargain?)
Berbatov (10.9m, plays unbelievably, sells for 32m. Nuff said)
Klinsmann (2m and 175,000 as both times count!)
Sheringham (2.1m)
Carrick (3m)
Ginola (2.5m)
Mendes (2m...... well i loved him anyway!)
Anderton (2m. You tell me he wasn't world class when not injured?)
Gascoigne (2m)
Robinson (1.7m)
Lineker (1.2m)
Waddle (650,000)
Ardiles and Villa (700,000 combined)
Mabbutt (120,000 best Spurs player ever)

Not gonna go any further than that as i reckon you are bored already.....................

Alan Devonshire £5,000 from Southall to West Ham. Biggest bargain of all time.

Think your being a bit harsh on Ramon Vega there, for a defender he scored a lot of goals....er, hang on...

Reckon you'll be adding VDV to that tops list in a couple of years. Hopefully.

As a Villa fan the one that sticks in my mind was Savo Milosevic.

Signed for a record 3.5m in 98 and failed to live up to expectations.

The OP forgot one of my favourites - Sami Hyypiä!
£3m or something, a decade of incredible service.

Nobody mentioned Jo (£17 mil to City) and Alfonso Alves (£12.7 mil to 'Boro) yet?
