I also offer condolences to all who knew, worked with, befriended and loved Dan Wheldon.

I would like to add my condolences as well. Dan wasn't that well known in the UK. Indy Cars doesn't get as much media exposure in the UK as it used(especially since the time, that Mansell was racing in it). Britain currently holds the WDC in Indy Cars with Dario Franchitti. I think Dan won the championship in 2005.
Re: Formula 1 2011 Thread.....
He was the champion in 2005 and won the Indy 500 that year too. He was a very talented driver and will be missed. He turned down a drive for BMW f1 in the mid 2000's.
Extremely sad about the news.
The tribute laps by the rest of the drivers was pretty moving. It's a shame Sky decided to switch to some cricket highlights instead of showing them. Let's hope they show some more respect to F1 next year.

Very sad news. My condolences to his family and friends.
Ironically I was listening to a podcast featuring Jackie Stewart, shortly before the Wheldon crash, where he discussed improving the safety in other formulae of motorsport. Maybe this now needs to be looked at.

Was a nasty crash - how the hell did his helmet come off?? How is that even possible
I doubt there is really much more they can do for the safety of motorcycle racing - When watching it, you always feel they are a little nuts to be doing that! F1 has pushed the boundaries of safety since Senna died and the others are playing catch up (slowly).

I think one of the other riders foot pegs hooked under his helmet and pulled it up, the head trauma caused by the chin strap snapping is what probably killed him.markopoloman wrote:Was a nasty crash - how the hell did his helmet come off?? How is that even possible![]()
I don't know if there has been an official explanation yet but I'd say it was a freak accident that no amount of precaution could have stopped it.

Re: Formula 1 2011 Thread.....
We have the new Indian Grand Prix this weekend. The track is very wide and so should allow overtaking, plus having two DRS zones helps. It looks okay, I reserve my full judgement for the race.
Lewis seems to be in trouble again. The grid penalty won't help him. At least his manager has decided to turn up this time.
I don't who will be top this weekend. It could be very close. I get the feeling that the Red Bull is still the fastest car out there.
The main focus is on the number 2 spot in the WDC. Can Jenson hang on to it?
Plus, can Vettel break Mansell's old record for most pole positions in a season?

I have a feeling something will happen - another dog running across the road striking a car, a great big hole appearing in the track or perhaps even a cow in the pit area!!

Re: Formula 1 2011 Thread.....
Well Massa surprised everyone by going fastest overall on Friday! Makes a change to see him bolt off into the lead
Lewis - again blaming himself for the yellow flag thing. He needs to start blaming everyone else again as he has become bloody boring now!
Redbull are still the fastest though and I would imagine Vettel will be trying for that pole and then doing whatever he can to bump Webber up to 2nd......

You evidently missed the underone of sarcasm present in what Hamilton said to the media then.markopoloman wrote:Lewis - again blaming himself for the yellow flag thing. He needs to start blaming everyone else again as he has become bloody boring now!

Pigs can indeed fly! Hamilton and Massa had another coming together but the race stewards DIDN'T penalise Hamilton for it! Wonders will never cease...

Re: Formula 1 2011 Thread.....
Hmmm, not exactly the most electrifying race. Another race win for Vettel and another record(most laps lead in a single season) goes his way. Only really Jenson's overtake on Webber and some of the lower field battles. The circuit was too dusty and that made the main overtaking spot(turn 4) difficult to use.
Oh dear! Lewis and Massa need to get into the boxing ring and just slug it out! I did think, that the incident was actually mostly Lewis' fault. Lewis just must want to see the final race in Brasil and be done with this year.

Massa and Hamilton's coming together aside, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
Hopefully there will be tweaks for next year.
