Indie record stores

Post by Fred83 » Thu Jan 06, 2011 11:37 am

Since hmv decided to close some of its stores yesterday. We seen a gradual decline in record stores. So i ask,is there any record stores bucking the thread?.last year there was a campaign in to support the local record stores.I know some do ok with their obscure selections and reasonable prices. And some i seen have taken to selling their stock online through specialist sites like musicstack. So is there a store near you that still gets business?.

There is one in Leicester called Rockaboom which has been around for as long as i can remember.

The prices are very reasonable and the selection is great, though leaned towards more specialist, if you've got good taste in music they will probably stock it

They also stock a decent selection of Vinyl, something HMV reduced over the last few years to nothing.

We had/have 2 others 5HQ and 2Funky, both dance music specialists but i dont know if they are still around.

It's every year dude! http://www.recordstoreday.com/Venues?co ... %20Kingdom

Brilliant for vinyl addicts like me....loads of artists release really limited edition records exclusively in indie record shops, usually one copy of each per store. There were two hour queues outside the three or four stores taking part in Brighton, but I managed to pick up....

Queens Of The Stone Age 12" picture disc
Them Crooked Vultures 10" pic disc
Metallica / Black Sabbath split 12" pic disc

Worth the queue.

There's one in Kingston upon Thames. I can't remember what it's called but they support local acts a lot.

there's one in upminster called crazy beat. god knows how it stays open, the owner is a real character, which may or may not help!

I think it specializes in funk r'n'b techno stuff.

Chelmsford used to have one called slipped discs, but it closed a few years ago.

there are a couple in leeds, crash records and jumbo records, hellraiser also specialise in punk, hardcore and metal too, when i was over in bradford the other week i was really pleased to see that Discovery was still there, when i was at uni 10 years ago i stumbled on this place and they used to do cds for 10p a go, remember getting gnr back catalogue on cd for about a quid in total, and my first trip there i bought about 30 cds and 20odd videos too only cost about a fiver too. Prices have gone up a little since then but still an amazing shop

The one I worked in for 8 years closed three years ago this February. Sad state when there are no other music stores around other than a crappy HMV and supermarkets.

There's one in Glasgow I'm in a fair bit that's always had decent prices on its second hand vinyl. Mostly though all of the music shops that are left tend to be really awful, it's depressing...

i don't even want to think how much money i spent in that place during the 90's!

There's a Rough Trade records near Brick Lane that stays open late. i went in there after spending a couple of hours in the pub - very dangerous. There used to be a whole load of great indie shops up in town back in the day.

Really good record store in Sheffield, Record Collector. It's divided into two shops one Vinyl and the other selling CD's, there is literally thousands of CD's in there, a lot of 2nd hand CD's at under £5....excellent value!

Theres one in Wrexham called Moonlight records thats well out of the town centre. The guy that runs it has been there for well over 18 years and i have no idea how he keeps it going. Mainly second hand stuff but with some newer stuff plus games and DVDS. When i was in college it used to do a roaring trade in bootleg live show CDs. Got some amazing Sepultura, Slayer and Fear Factory ones of him :D
