Albums of the Year 2010

Post by Sureshot » Tue Dec 28, 2010 2:31 am

It's late enough. Here are my favourite 10 in no particular order:

Fear Factory - Mechanize [click]
Off With Their Heads - In Desolation [click]
Bullet for my Valentine - Fever [click]
Comeback Kid - Symptoms and Cures [click]
Soilwork - The Panic Broadcast [click]
Deftones - Diamond Eyes [click]
Slash - Slash [click]
Daft Punk - Tron: Legacy [click]
Netsky - Netsky [click]
Various - Sick Music Volume 2 [click]

Albums which should have made the list, but I was disappointed in:

Cancer Bats - Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones
The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
The Sword - Warp Riders

Actually been a better year than I remembered.

Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe 2
Soulfly - Omen
Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
Hole - Nobody's Daughter
Buckcherry - All Night Long
Down - Diary of a Mad Band
Airbourne - No Guts, No Glory
Black Label Society - Order of The Black
Weezer - Hurley & Death to All False Metal

Not a great year imo....

2011 hopefully will be better, starting with the release of Anvil's latest :D

Not strictly an album, but a series of mixes by Madlib would be my choice:

If you like jazz/funk/hiphop then you'll enjoy.
I've not bought much this year, mostly back catalogue stuff.

Actually, I think 2010's been a pretty good year for music. Mine, in no particular order, would be:

Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier (Seems to be winning out as the forum's favourite album of 2010 too)
Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare
Manic Street Preachers - Postcards from a young man
Apocolyptica - 7th Symphony
Skunk Anansie - Wonderlustre
Disturbed - Asylum
Slash - Slash
Deftones - Diamond Eyes
Lostprophets - The Betrayed
Massive Attack - Heligoland

My personal top 5 albums of the year 2010:

Daft Punk - TRON Legacy Soundtrack
Image
DP have returned and created nothing short of a stunning and moving blend of orchestral and electronic movie score. The melodies are touching and powerful without becoming too overpowering, and the dance tracks will truly make you bob your head. Definitely the best thing about the new TRON movie was the music, so here it is!

Apoptygma Berzerk - Imagine There's No Lennon (APBL2009)
Image
This is truly one of the best live albums I've heard in a while. A stellar performance by this Norwegian electro-rock band. Catchy melodies and thought-provoking lyrics that are bound to make you sing along!

Kim Wilde - Come Out and Play
Image
After a long hiatus, Kim Wilde is back in style with a pop rock album that simply blows you away from beginning to end. Burning with a bright energy that radiates like the 80's laser style videos, Kim Wilde provides nothing short of a masterpiece of electronic pop rock!

mind.in.a.box - R.E.T.R.O.
Image
Anyone who grew up with 8 bit computers (and especially the Commodore 64) might feel a certain special connection to this album. In addition to containing some sweet remixes of classic C64 game themes, R.E.T.R.O. contains several specially written songs that shine with nostalgia and simple love for the past. This Dutch duo supplies nothing but a thought-provoking and emotional experience that goes way deeper than most retro compilation albums. Highly recommended!

a-ha - 25
Image
It's hard to imagine that a-ha is on their final tour, but that's the sad truth, so it's with a hint of nostalgic sadness that this compilation comes as their last release. Looking back on 25 years of pure art, a-ha gives us their best compilation yet. As well as containing several rare single versions and radio edits, it also contains their latest and last single "Butterfly Butterfly (The Last Hurrah)". If you haven't heard much from these Norwegians that have taken the world by storm since their 1985 hit "Take On Me", this compilation is a good insight into their legacy. Long live A-Ha!

Murderdolls - Women and Children last
Cradle of Filth - Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa
Calabrese - They Call us Death

Didn;t buy anything until October, and those 3 are all Digital downloads - as usual, I'll end up finding great stuff from this year throughout the next few years.

Oh, and Marina and the Diamonds - The Family Jewels. Not exactly my usual taste, but god damn it it's a great album.
