Help Finding an old 486 PC?
Hey Doods!
So just when you want one of these things, you can't actually get one!
I'm looking for a 486 PC to play some old games on. A 386 is too slow for my purposes and I'm not really after a pentium, so I wanted a nice 486, DX2 or above, to run these games!
Thing is unless I'm searching wrong there are only like 2 systems on eBay! Anyone know of a place I could pick these up, or, even better, have one hanging around at all? I know postage on these things is a censored, but if I can get the system for a good price I'm not too worried!

You could try sites like gumtree and Freecycle.
Failing that you could buy a cheap-o PC and down grade

I've gone back a few months on Gumtree and nothing has been older than say, a pentium 3 or so. Maybe that's just my area though.
I'll give Freecycle a look though, thanks dood!

I've taken a look on eBay and 486 systems are like gold dust. If you can't get a 486 system then you may need to branch out a little a get an early pentium model, nothing higher than a 133Mhz though as unless it has the old 'turbo' switch some games will be just too fast.
Re: Help Finding an old 486 PC?
I can't help at being confused by the situation! A few years ago you couldn't pay to get rid of these old systems, usually. If you go on ebay.com now the Americans have plenty going for like $50-$60 each, how annoying!
I'd be happy with a slighty faster system like a 90 or indeed a 133 but I can't find any of these on ebay either, what a shame!
Thanks for looking though.

Well, if you really must get a 486 PC, I have a few and I could quite easily part with one or two.
PM me for further details!

DOSbox...though I must admit i had a similar hankering for a 486 not so long back, for the full on retro pc experience...doesn't sound like it's worth the expense though. The Master wrote:It's deep in the crack of the sofa along with half a dozen ha'pennies and some really ripe twiglets.takesages wrote:I'm looking for a 486 PC to play some old games on.

Do you have a 5.25" floppy disk drive by any chance?woody.cool wrote:I keep my 486s for 'the retro experience' but not got the room nowadays, so will be happy to offload one of them.

Re: Help Finding an old 486 PC?
I do, but it isn't for sale or trade, as it's the only working 5.25" drive I have (I use it for 'preservation' purposes) however, I'm quite happy to read in 5.25" disks and convert them to disk images or 3.5" disks for you.oli_lar wrote:Do you have a 5.25" floppy disk drive by any chance?woody.cool wrote:I keep my 486s for 'the retro experience' but not got the room nowadays, so will be happy to offload one of them.
Saying that, I have a spare 5.25" drive that's "spares & repairs" ..... it sort of works, but is very unreliable (unlike the one in my disk imaging machine)
Re: Help Finding an old 486 PC?
That would be very handy if you could do that for me. Its nothing immediate but there is an undumped homebrew X68000 game that I'm chomping at the bit to play. There is someone selling a copy of it on Yahoo Japan so if you can dump such floppy formats I'd be very grateful. Its entirely possible via PC as I have a description of the process saved from a forum.

Re: Help Finding an old 486 PC?
Well, I'll certainly give it a try ..... if you have instructions on how to do this via a standard PC floppy drive/controller then that will help tremendously. Thanks.oli_lar wrote:That would be very handy if you could do that for me. Its nothing immediate but there is an undumped homebrew X68000 game that I'm chomping at the bit to play.
