Famous People from your Home Town

Post by TwoHeadedBoy » Sun Apr 25, 2010 10:28 pm

Just for a bit of fun...

Your home town, and as many notable names you can think of who are also from there.

Me first, obviously... Waterloo/Crosby! Home of:

Kenny Dalglish (football man)
Steve McManaman (another football man)
Kenny Everett (comedy man)
Peter Serafinowicz (another comedy man)
Anne Robinson (Weakest Link woman)
Cherie Booth (shark-mouthed wife of Tony Blair)
Josh Kirby (illustrator, known for the Star Wars posters and the Discworld covers)
Edward Smith (captain of the Titanic)
J. Bruce Ismay (Owner of the Titanic, unfairly portrayed as a cowardly sort in the film)
Clinic (amazingly good band - they've supported Radiohead, and are bigger in America than they are here)
Ultrabeat (Scouse house group, most well-known for their 2003 song "Pretty Green Eyes")

...That's all I can think of for now.
My comics blog (mostly lesser-known UK stuff from the 80s and 90s)

Yate:

JK Rowling
Wayne Hussey. Of goth band the Mission.
...

Erm, thats it.

To be fair, we are really two towns - Yate and the comically named Chipping Sodbury (where I was also born),as no one really cares in which town they live in. So if we add on them:

WG Grace's...brother.
Dave Prowse....lived there. For a little bit..
Edward Jenner - he who started the immunisation against Smallpox
Sir James Dyson - Of vacuum cleaner fame..

Oh, according to Wiki Chris Sawyer lived here too - which he didn't. Because I was the one who made up the story to tell some friends, and it seems as though they posted it on wiki
Possibly we may have had Mr Geoff Crammond here though, as it's where the old Microprose site was.

Sydney Greenstreet - the actor. He is the bad guy in The Maltese Falcon(Kasper Gutman). He is also in Casablanca. Plus he did a load of films with Peter Lorre. To think he came from Sandwich in Kent(my home town - sadly)!!!!!

Sandwich? You had Al Murray and Pamela Anderson round recently then, if the adverts are to be trusted.

No one, no one at all.

But, Russel Grant (that horoscope/psychic bloke) lives not far from where I used to live.

Yes that's right twoheadedboy you've seen the Walker's Crisps adverts. Not only them but Jenson Button, Marco Pierre White, and JLS and Frank Lampard even visited my old secondary school in it! I even mentioned it on the Formula One thread on this board.

Speaking of schools... Craig Phillips (who won the first Big Brother) went to my school. When he won, loads of my teachers were interviewed for the local news, but they had to make stuff up because none of them could remember anything about him. Nothing whatsoever.

Liverpool, so all the obvious ones.

Although apparantly slightly more interesting (but not really), through the years I have been a neighbour of both Alexi Sayle and Neville Southall (ex everton goalie - he waved to me on xmas morning as I zoomed past on my shiney new bmx) :D

Wythenshawe (my birth town) in Manchester has varying levels of stardom -

Johnny Marr (The Smiths)
Caroline Aherne (Royle Family)
Freddy Garrity (Freddy and the Dreamers)
Eddie Large (Little & Large)
Jason Orange (Take That)
Vini Reilly (Durutti Column)
Paul Young (Sad Cafe, Mike & the Mechanics)
Simon Gregson (Steve MacDonald on Coronation Street)

and the legend that is Harry H. Corbett (Steptoe & Son) was raised in Wythensawe (he was born in Burma, but moved to Manchester after his mum died when he was 3).

Huntingdon, though the boundaries have meant some local chaps are missed or forgotten.

Oliver Cromwell, king killer and puritan
John Major, PM
Samuel Pepys, diary writer
Henry Royce, from Rolls-Royce
Robin Hood, outlaw associated with Notts in myth. In 1247 Robert Hood was earl of Huntingdon at his death.
Hereward the Wake, Saxon warleader against Norman invaders.
Darren Bent, Footballer. Born London but grew up and still refers to Huntingdon as home. Will most likely be having a kickabout with him again if not in World Cup squad.
Iwan Thomas, athlete. Another home grown sportsman who was born elsewhere, doesn't have the same draw as Benty to the town unsurprisingly.
Gemma Arterton, Bond girl, okay so her connection is lived with me for a few days in 2001 but I gave her her first Oscar so I'm counting it!

Oh and the town centre was on the cover of Crap Towns 2 despite not being in the book.
The towns castle was burnt down by the knights who killed Thomas Beckett so "the King would not be as angry".

My small hometown in Belgium (well, we're not technically small at all with 40,000 people living in it, for Belgian standards anyway) only has 1 celebrity that might vaguely ring a bell for other Europeans:

This was quite a big hit all over Europe back in the day. They apparently met up for the first time in a pub about half a mile from my house

Oh, and the girl that sings this:

She used to live just across the road from me :D

Always on the look-out for fighting games!
Have any stray ones laying about? Let me know and we'll try to give them a cosy new home.
