Angered by Atari, baffled by BBC, confused by Commodore...

Post by MarkTheMorose » Sun Feb 14, 2010 5:24 pm

I've not been too unlucky in my retro purchases, but I do seem to have a growing collection of systems that 'nearly work', and quite a few that don't.

I wonder if any Atari alchemists can help with video/TV output problems on a 65XE and Atari ST. Both give only a black and white picture through their RF ports. They are both models that have built-in modulators. In the case of the ST, it also gives a weird picture through the monitor port with a SCART lead, though I understand that's not unusual with modern TVs. White comes out sort of yellow, and it's too bright a picture.

I seem to recall it having a fine picture when tested on a much older TV, but that's not ideal. I was thinking that maybe a composite lead might work better, then, than RGB SCART.

I've partly disassembled the ST, hoping to gain access to the modulator, to see if there's something I can twiddle to fine-tune the TV picture. However, it's like breaking in to Fort Knox, there's so much shielding in there. So before I go any further, and start losing bolts, does anyone have any ideas?

I haven't tested the 65XE with a monitor, as I don't have a cable for it. Another modulator twiddle?

For BBC boffins: a BBC Micro doesn't boot up properly, and for Commodore conjurers: a C64GS doesn't power up at all. I've tried testing the GS's internal fuse, and it's fine. I don't know enough about electronics to start prodding about, so again, if there are any ideas...

What happens with the Beeb? Is it powering on at all? Does it make any noise? Anything on the screen?

The Beeb, hmm, it's been a while, and I've hidden it away... as I recall the beep sounds continuously, I don't recall there being any screen display, so maybe it's all black.

@MarkTheMorose

hello there, I think I heard Jdanddiet shoutin' me a bit ago =D

Okay - lets see - Atari ST

The video port is good, however the Atari ST need a signal to be "pulled high" this means tieing a voltage to it - if not you will only get a monocrhome output from the video chip -

heres a pin / signal ref

however I am having trouble to find the ST Video Port Pinout - >:(

The BBC I know a chap that KNOW'S! so I will give him a buzz tomorrow, need to catchup with him anyway =D

okay, found a RGB lead schematic... gonna sleep on it and then tell you what you need to do to get your Video output in colour from the Video Port

Continuous beep and dark screen (except for maybe a flashing cursor) could be anything on a Beeb.

My offer still stands

Have you been distressed by Dragon or exasperated by Einstein?

No, but I am Disinterested in the Dragons, (have 3x to sell), and have Ebayed my Einsteins. To take the alliteration a little too far (heh!), extending to systems that also work, I am:

Arsed with Amstrads (CPC464 x2, CPC6128, and PPC640 awaiting auction, and 3x PCW's to throw under a train)
Ashamed by Aquariuses (they seemed a good idea at the time)
Apathetic about Atari XEGS (2x, but I've already got other 8-bit Ataris)
Callous about CDTV (2x, again to go)
Cold on Colecovisions (3x to go)
Enraged by Electrons (3, or more, heading to auction one day)
Indifferent about Intellivisions (3? to go likewise)
Jaded by Jaguar (Atari's last effort evicted)
Merciless with my Master Systems (3x, they're going, and that's that)
Miffed with MSX (2x Toshiba HX10 taking up space)
Peed-off by Plus/4's (they're going too)
Phlegmatic about Philips (3 or so unwelcome Videopac guests)
Revolted by Radofins (4 perhaps to join the clear-out)
Saddened by Saturns (2x, eager to enthrall eBayers)
Symied by Spectrums (have ended up with 4x 48k non-workers; have 2x recased 48Ks, 2x +2, 1x +3 to go)
Ticked-off with Tandy (TRS 80 CoCo to go-go)
Tired with TI (3 or so 99/4A's joining the crowd)
Vexed by Vectrex (two or three joining all the above)

I hereby endorse this thread, only because alliteration is always awesome.

Hmm, well. I managed to get to the ST's modulator, after having to disassemble almost everything in the case. I found two pots, but neither of them will fine tune to give a colour output through RF. Hope I can put it all back the way it came out...

Next step is to try the ST video leads on an older TV.
