black mass - almost too much of the brutality of the character but it was fine
bridge of spies - precision film making which made for an exceptional movie
the kingdom of dreams and madness - perfect accompaniment for the studio ghibli movies
poltergeist - terrible rejigging of the horror classic, most of the ideas were started but never got a solution, and don't get me started with sam rockwell

watching beware the slenderman now

Saw a poster for a second season of Fortitude, which reminded me I wanted to watch the first. So started on that.
It's very strange, but I'm loving it so far.

Eisenstein in Guanajuato - the latest film from Peter Greenaway. A sort of biopic about the Russian film director Sergei Eisenstein. It's about his ill fated trip to Mexico and trying to make a film there. It's really about his unsuccessful love affair with his Mexican guide at the time. That's the most interesting part of the film. There's the usual Greenaway stuff of throwing in visual tricks and so on in - that's fine, but not really what I was interested in. I'd sort of put this film in the middle of his canon of films.

High School of the Dead

Pretty good although a lot of boobs and upskirt shots.

Shame it stopped at episode 12.

On netflix I watched Green Room.

About a punk band that gets caught up in a murder in a neo nazi bar and are going to be killed due to being witness to it. Anton Yelchin is good as is Patrick Stewart as the head bad guy.

Watched 'Forbidden Planet' last night on Blu-ray, really enjoyed it. It was nice to watch a 50's sci-fi 'B' movie that wasn't that cheesy and to actually have some money spent on the sets and costumes. And of course, the introduction of 'Robby the Robot'. It was a little odd seeing Leslie Nielsen in a serious role, I kept expecting him to shout out 'Stop calling me Shirley!'

The Grand Tour - the finale in Dubai. There was a BMW i3 versus VW Golf GTi contest, some whenching, a drifting contest and Richard did a drag race with the Porsche 918 against a Bugatti Veyron along a street in Dubai.

Christine - unfairly overlooked John Carpenter classic. Really well shot in a way that makes the car look truly sinister, creepy without relying on jump scares or loads of blood, and the shots of Christine repairing herself still look brilliant more than 30 years on. Definitely up there with his best films

The Beatles : Eight Days a Week - the Touring Years - a documentary on the touring years of The Beatles. Interesting stuff(most of which we already know) and their amazing music. Pretty decent. It's up on Amazon Prime for free at the moment.

Working my way through the awesome arrested development. Not sure why it too me so long to get around to it. Watched Bastille day last night. 90 minutes of running around but was not too bad.

All is Lost - with Robert Redford. The best way to describe it would be Cast Away set on a damaged yacht. It's almost like a silent film - with virtually no dialogue. Very atmospheric in its nature.

Chi-Raq - the latest film by Spike Lee. It's based on the Ancient Greek play Lysistrata by Aristophanes. The setting is moved to Chicago in the modern day setting. It's about trying to find peace between two rival gangs(the Spartans and the Trojans - yes, they reference that). It comments on gender politics, race and gun crime. It's perhaps a bit out there, but I enjoyed it actually - there's flaws in it(for one thing, it's about 30 minutes too long), it's perhaps a bit more enjoyable than some of Lee's more recent work.
