Battle of the 8-bits competition at Byte Back

Post by witchfinder » Fri Oct 03, 2008 8:13 am

Sorry to start a separate thread for this but I'd like to try and get this off the ground ASAP as a bit of planning is required....

One of the competitions at Byte Back 2009 will finally settle those 80's playground arguments once and for all! Which is better - the ZX Spectrum or the Commodore 64? Or was it the much-maligned Amstrad CPC or even the BBC Micro?

We are looking for teams to represent each of these four classic 8-bit home computers, with a maximum of 4 players per team. Each team will then choose a game for their preferred system (which must also be available for the other three) and a nominated player from each team will play each game on their system in an attempt to get the highest score. The team with the best overall ranking over the 4 games will then have their system declared the best of the 8-bits. Of course it is completely unscientific, but so were those playground arguments! :D

If you are interested in representing one of the four systems, why not post here and see who else may want to join the team with you. The full format and games will be determined later but some suggestions of suitable games that were released on all four platforms are:

Way of the Exploding Fist
Manic Miner
Chuckie Egg
Thrust
Barbarian
Arkanoid
Sabre Wulf
Bruce Lee

Any other suggestions of possible games welcomed!

Edit: Teams are now taking shape as follows...

Team 64
merman
Mayhem (possibly)
Kenz

Team Speccy
SirClive
psj3809
JetSetWilly
boyo

Team CPC
woody.cool
woody.cool's bro

Team Beeb

Sounds a good idea. Would scrub off Bruce Lee though as i know some players who can keep playing that non stop (Judging by the scores over at myspeccy.com) as its a very easy game.

Commando, Cobra (perhaps Bombjack) would be 3 good uns as well

Some of those games never got a Beeb release... Also Head Over Heels, great as it is, wouldn't really be suitable for a high score challenge competition!

What about picking one game per system that stands out giving each one a chance to shine then pick the rest of the games? For example, Chase HQ or R Type on the speccy are fantastic speccy conversions against the others etc etc. Good idea?

Sorry didnt realise you put the Beeb.

Battle of the 8 bits i thought was only down to 3 !

If its the BBC then theres a choice of Frak or Mr Ee thats it isnt it ! ;)

Seriously i would stick to the original trio otherwise it'll be difficult finding a game for all 4 which is decent

Well all the 8 games I mentioned at the top are available for all 4 systems... And I'm looking for 4 games available across all the systems!

If you're talking release dates then I believe the Amstrad was actually the last to hit the shelves so technically the C64, Speccy and Beeb are the original trio... :D

I'm surprised nobody has come on here yet saying 'what about the Atari 8-bits?' or 'what about the Dragon?' ;)

So Kenz and psj3809, do you want to represent Team 64 and Team Speccy respectively? :D

Would love to represent the Speccy, but I fear I would be a handicap.

I wouldn't worry, it's only a bit of fun after all... Plus the games will be decided well in advance so you can practice! :D
