It is actually worth getting one of these for retro gaming on the move?

I need a new gadget fix - and I do not think the Pandora is going to be it as it's months off, if indeed it appears at all

Its an Advent 4211, 275 from PC World. I didnt want to go down the Linux root, the Asus Eee's which were XP werent as powerful.

This Advent is a pretty good speed (New Intel Atom processor) and also has an 80 gig hard disk which is impressive compared to the mini ones on the Eee.

Use it for playing games, watching videos, MAME/N64 etc. At the time i did my homework for once and looked at many UMPC's, this one had very good reviews and is a surprisingly decent price from PC World. Can recommend it. Keyboards good, can touch type on that as well.

It's well worth it Boyo. They bought a few at work and I've been tasked with installing XP (they came with Linux) on each. Brilliant little machine and I've had one on hand this past week playing all sorts of games. The only problem with them is that the screen resolution can be a bit small so some games may require adjustment.

The eee's are great but if you want a bit more power i would pay a fraction more. Like i say that Advent has a faster processor, 80 gig hard drive (compared to 10 or 12 for the eee), 10.2 widescreen monitor (compared to 9 inch) and the keyboard as its a fraction bigger is very easy to use.

I had a 9 inch screen UMPC before and the keyboard was just a slight bit uncomfortable.

The difference between the Asus XP eee and the Advent (and perhaps a few others) isnt that much.

I love these mini PC gadgets and i must admit theyre improving all the time. I had one back in Feb which was decent , was 375 quid though but the speed difference 8 months later was huge (I sold it and got this Advent one which was so much faster).

I'd say that the Eee PC 1000 is the one to go for at the moment, if you've got the money. It's got a spec pretty similar to the Advent 4211 but with the addition of a battery life of up to 7 hours which is about twice as long. That said, it costs a fair bit more and if you don't need that much time away from a power socket, the 4211 is well worth looking at.

The Eee PC 901 is slightly smaller and cheaper but of similar spec. However, the keyboard is the same as the older Eee PCs and not nearly as nice. Have a play on it first before making your mind up though.

The other machine worth considering is the Acer Aspire One. These also have the Atom CPU, but you can get a Linux model for under Â£200 which seems like a total steal. Again, the battery life isn't great, but at least it's on a par with the older Eee PCs, whilst the keyboard is much better.

Love all the competition at the moment for these 'netbooks' as theyre calling them. Can only get better and better over the next 6 months. Can imagine a MAME cab running most of the latest games but with an ultra lightweight cheap Netbook in it !

Well I may have a Median laptop up for swaps for a good one of these..I am looking for a powerfull small machine that can run emulators at a good speed and be able to use the net...

yeah, netbooks (or webbooks, depending where you go) seem to be the next big thing at the mo. The Advent models 4211, 4212, 4213 all seem very good and have all had glowing reviews, but then I work at PC World, so I would say that (we make Advent

Must admit i was veryyyy surprised how cheap it was at PC World, always thought PC World was very dear for things like that but prices seem to have come right down. As i said 6 months earlier i had bought a Hewlett Packard UMPC which was about 375. 275 isnt a bad price at all

Was at PC World last night - sure the Advents were like Â£200, down from Â£250.

Need to put some pics in this thread to compare what we are talking about...

Damn that seriously is a good price. I've got the 4211, if that ones down to 200 quid thats a true bargain.

I had a quick peek on the website and it's still Â£279.99 there. So it's either a special to that particular store or some other product. As Overheat said, Advent is just the DSG (Dixons, Currys, PC World, etc.) "own brand" so a lot of other products have similar names. Don't be worried about build quality though as the 4211/4212/4213 are designed by MSI and built by Compal Electronics who also make laptops for HP and Dell.

Yeah isnt it basically the MSI Wind but with a few more enhancements ?

When i'm working at the weekend i often use my Advent to stream the american football i watch over the net so i can work and listen/watch at the same time. Nice little gadget, i have one of those wireless enhancer plug thingies which it obviously works well with. Very light as well, battery could be better but i'm sure you can buy a better one. Play MAME a lot on mine and like i say a fair few other emulators. Ideal for the price

The 4211 got really good reviews because of the spec and especially because of the screen compared to its rivals, which is much clearer.

Yeah its a good little machine.

Just measured it, 26 cm long, 18 cm width. Very small and light

Sorry to bang on about it but check out the www.oqo.com (or on youtube). Flipping love this gadget, i got lucky getting mine off ebay
