Ford Capri

Post by forestville » Sat Jul 14, 2007 12:55 pm

The Ford Capri was a great car of the 70s and 80s who had one or got to go out for a ride in one.

My mate had a 2.0 sport in white.

His older brother had a 2.8i, at the time it was awesome.

Shame it's "remake" (I use that word sparringly) - the Ford Probe was so dire!

Lucky it was'nt blessed with the same name.

It took me a while to "get" the Capri, as I was more of a fan of The Granada.

Especially the MK2 that was always the gangsters car of choice in episodes of Jimmy Nail's SPENDER series.

Helped that my old man had a lovely 2.8 one as well.

You rarely see them anymore though, which is such a crying shame.

They were a nice car but one of my mates had one and drove it like a 'typical Capri owner'. He had the 2.8i one and it was amazing how fast it was back then, i dont mind fast cars at all but driving it like a n*b and up someones a*se all the time and overtaking like a muppet was very chavvish.

The Capri evolved into the Escort and now the Suburu for ultra chav cars.

Shame as when they first came out they were a great sports car. Still see the odd one now but as theyre so old the drivers dont thrash them thank god.

The 28i is a real drivers car..

Twitchy as F... on the back end, but if you hit the right bend at the right angle it was a drifters dream....
You didn't even have to be speeding to get the thing to slide out, and there is no way I would ever let the Mrs drive one. :)

Remember my mate getting up to 70 what seemed like instantly in second gear in his old Capri ! Took me a while to get up to 70 in mine but in this the car didnt even seem to be begging for 3rd gear, was quite happy up to 70 in second !

Quote from Wikipedia (I know, I know...)

"Possible future Capris

The British magazine Auto Express and German magazine Stern have shown computer drawings of a proposed Focus-based Capri, with Auto Express advancing a 2005 release date in their July 2002 issue. In September 2003, Ford presented the Visos concept-car, a hatchback coupé, in the Frankfurt Auto Show."

Maybe he had his tuned for maximum acceleration, you should have asked him to do top speed as I'm sure it would not reach its peak like on normal factory settings. Was his 16valve or 8v? I think 8v make better acceleration but top speed lower than 16v if someone can correct me here.
