The Mighty Micro

Post by MattyC64c » Thu Jan 24, 2019 6:13 am

While looking at old videos regarding computers and the coming of the low cost microprocessors that emerged in the 1970's I came across an old six part TV series called 'The Mighty Micro' presented by the late computer scientist Christopher Evans. In this program DR Evans talks about what he predicts the future will be like with the Microprocessor revolution. Automation, business use, home use, education etc.

It's quite fascinating. I think on episode three he shows an approximation of an iPad, or at the very least, a Kindle device to read a book, and this is from a programme produced in 1979!

Some of his other predictions are quite accurate as well, like debit/credit cards with chips embedded to debit the account holders account at point of purchase. He does talk about a cashless society as well, but inaccurately predicts this happening sometime in the 90's. Well, it's 2019 and while we have become less attached to cash, we're still not cashless, I'm nearly there though.

I'm going to see if I can get hold of the book. I love these computer technology predictions from the past.

Thanks for that, I'd completely forgotten about that show. Saw bits of it at the time, it's fun to go back and watch them in hindsight, see how close they were for their predictions, and fun to see what was considered amazing tech at the time.
