What size TV did you play on?

Post by MattyC64c » Thu Aug 30, 2012 4:32 pm

Everyone discusses what games they played back in the day, but I haven't seen any posts about what TV's you played your machines on. So what did you play them on? When you play games now, what do you play them on?

Sometimes when I play games with my nephew's they complain that they can't see the screen or it's too small. This happens even 19" and 32" TV's. I've told them many times that back my day, you were lucky to have your own 14" TV. Kids these days don't know they were born.

I remember when my older brother had his first computer, the Commodore 64, Christmas 1983. I distinctly remember that for the first, year or so we played on it with a black and white TV in the bedroom, and during the summer holidays we hooked it up to the living room box a few times. Then our parents bought a 14" Toshiba, which if memory serves me right, lasted from about 1984 until 1999. They don't make them like that anymore.

Anyone here lucky enough to have a bigger TV in your bedrooms as a kid? Was the 14" TV the standard? Or was your computer constantly connected to the main TV of the house?

14" Daewoo in my bedroom as a nine year old, which I was given along with an N64 and Mario Kart 64 for my joint birthday/Christmas 1997. I'm embarrassed to admit that I still used that TV for all of my gaming until just a few years back, even completed the likes of Super Mario Galaxy on it. Belter of a set!

From mid 1988 onwards it's been this:

Image

It's probably classed as a 14" screen, though it's actually about 13.6". Before that it was a non-scart TV that was ued with an RF lead (shudder) for my VCS, Vic-20 and C64.

I got this after having my Amiga 500 for about 11 months. It was a massive improvement having a SCART RGB signal.

It's still working now. The plastic input (Scart to TV) button is actually worn half away through tens of thousands of presses.

A great TV.

I usually use my 40" screen these days for most retro things, apart from my Amigas.

I was lucky enough to have a 26" TV in my bedroom as a kid. It was my parents' old TV, which they in turn got from my grandparents. A real heirloom

While it was cool to have a TV that big, it only supported PAL-50. Over RF. Also, imagine how cool it was to have a US SNES (already hideous) on top of this:

If anyone wonders why they used to refer to TV's and the like as 'Brown goods', just look at the old sets from the 70's and their fake woodgrain finishes.

Liam, I'm impressed with your memory there!

We had a 12" Granada portable. Used to wreck the fingers, as the tuning was done on tiny dials with sharp edges. I'll try and find a picture of it eventually (or even better, find the actual telly again!).

I started off with an ancient Matsui 14", when it broke I had to switch to a built in TV card on my PC (was a woefully underpowered thing using a average sized CRT), then my brother got given a beko 14" with his Gamecube and I used to steal it for games, then after my dad upgraded the living room I pilfered the 21" Sanyo with 3D Sound (that was the dogs b******s for NFSU2) which a while later my dad made me get rid of as it was too big for my room apparently, I would have been about 15 then and it wasnt until my 16th Birthday I got my 14" Dualband which pretty much gets on alright with everything, on my 18th birthday I bought a 17" LCD Acer Ferrari monitor which is also a digital ready TV so I use that for my 360, my brother, the little s**t, just got bought a 19" HD ready TV with builtin DVD and freeview as well as being allowed free reign ove the main 42" TV in the living room for his PS3.

The only TV I care to remember (or half-remember) was an old 1987 PYE TV. It was a 17" I think and had a plastic-yellow looking finish, but my god was the rf connection amazing. We played up until the SNES on that thing, before The Saturn came with games like Sega Rally and Virtua Cop which obviously required a little more than 17inches :D

I am trying to source that tv for years now, but cant even find a picture of it, and it makes me sad

I am not joking, if anyone manages to find a picture Id be grateful, or if anyone manages to find one for sale, I would pay over the odds for just another memory of mine !

As in the first post the first TV I played games on was a small portable B/W TV. I have no idea what make it was, but apparently it came free when my dad bought a new 26" Sony TV in about 1982. The Sony sat in the living room inside a cabinet with doors - I think most TVs had cabinets back in the 80's.

Anyway that living room TV was used for gameing with a Commodore 64 from time to time. It lasted from about 1983 until about 1997 when the colour went funny and it finaly conked out.

Brother had new Toshiba 14" TV in about 1985 and it was a cracking set for the time, With programmable channels and digital readout on the front. It lasted until at least 1999. I had my own Commodore in about 1988, and although I had a small 14" TV to use it on, it certainly wasn't a new set, it had little tuning dials and a wood-grain finish. I got rid of it when my brother started work and I had the Toshiba. This was 1991, not long after I started secondary school.

I used the Toshiba to play on the C64, Sega Mega Drive and PlayStation 1.

From about 1999 until 2004 I didn't play games on TV as I was a PC only guy. All games were played on a 19" CRT Monitor, until 2004 when I purchased 17" LCD screen for PC gaming. The blacks weren't as good, but it did take up a lot less space. My current PC has a 19" LG HDTV.

In 2005 I bought a second hand Panasonic 26" CRT for the Original Xbox.
In 2006 A 26" Samsung HDTV for Xbox 360 and PS3.
in 2010 upgraded to a Panasonic 1080p 32" HDTV for Xbox 360, PS3 and for my PC as a second monitor. It's great for playing emulators on.

The old Toshiba we had was not unlike that. There was a little white plastic thing you were supposed to push into the dials to make them easier to turn but that soon disappeared - unsurpisingly!

And usually my memory's shocking but anything to do with old tellies and old cartoons and I become effin' Rain Man!

It all started for me in the late seventies with a 14inch black and white portable, then a 25inch Hitach colour when I got a Sinclair Spectrum a few years later

How on earth do you all remember the makes of your tellys??

Anyway, from about 1985 to 2005 it was various 14 inch colour CRT portables. When I moved out I ended up with the missus ancient 14 inch CRT, then in about 2009 moved onto the 32 inch CRT (the big widescreen silver ones of the time).

Blimey, I didn't realise I was a 14-incher for so long.

I remember if my mum and dad ever went out me and my brother would hook the speccy/new/snes up to the big telly downstairs, it looked amazing!
