B movies on BBC2 teatime, mid 90s?

Post by parappa » Thu Oct 13, 2011 4:15 pm

Does anyone remember that around 1995 BBC used to show classic black and white 50s sci fi movies like Invaders From Mars? I can't remember whether it was every day or just once a week, I would love to see a list of all the ones they showed. I know one was 50 foot Woman and I think another was Beast from 5000 Fathoms, having just been randomly searching youtube for monster trailers. I think that was a golden age for cult shows on TV, as BB2 and Channel 4 always seemed to have something interesting on from 6pm onwards - The Avengers, Third Rock from the Sun, the Munsters, Neverwhere. They always had classic kung fu and action movies like Jackie Chan (back when he was cool) on late at night too.

Hi - remember this - but I think it was late 80s

they showed Robinson Crusoe on Mars, Invaders from Mars, War of the Worlds (1953), forbidden planet, futureworld or west world, and Colossus: The Forbin Project (source of my avatar! :D )

There was also a late night C4 show called worst of hollywood that showed things like Mars Needs Women and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

YES - I loved Invaders From Mars, it was bloody terrifying other than when later in the film you could see the zips in the back of the aliens' suits.

Must have had more of an effect in the 50s when UFO fever was rampant.

In retrospect, this really was the best SF season that the beeb ever ran

(just remembered they also showed Quatermass 2 - the sid james one - and the excellent Soylent Green)

I wonder if they showed Logan's Run given it's short skirts and all

Thanks for the name reminders everyone. I think British classic cult stuff must have been in a surge of popular then, after all John Steed from Avengers was in an Oasis video.

I'm sure they ran Fiend Without A Face - brain/spinal column thieving invisible aliens... one of my favourites!

basically they just put Mark Gatiss's DVD collection on I suspect.

the Man with X-ray eyes I think was on later at night, as was Brainstorm. Unless they were edited to bits

I remember when BBC2 and Channel 4 used to do theme nights. The three I remember most fondly are Python Night (30 years of Monty Python), Godzilla Night (I think this was around the release of the 1998 American atrocity Godzilla, which in actual fact didn't even have Godzilla in it) and Red Dwarf Night (ten years of Red Dwarf).

Not really sure about the B-movies, but I do have a vague memory of seeing The Amazing Colossal Man on (I think) Channel 4.
