Ghetto blasters/Boom box

Post by Sega2006 » Wed Jul 13, 2011 10:59 pm

When I was round a mates earlier sorting out a HiFi it reminded me of the first proper music machine I had (unless you count the fisher price cassette player with mic), it was a wacking great portable radio/cassette otherwise known as a ghetto blaster. I cant remember its name or 100% of what it looked like but it was big, silver and pretty good to use, it broke one day and my parents binned it which makes me rather miffed now as I proberly could have fixed it.
Does anyone else have fond memorys of these shoulder crushing noise makers of the 80's?

Not really a proper Boom box, but my first piece of audio equipment was a single cassette desk AIWA, it was black, slim-line and had no EQ, lol! Rather oddly, it had a rather decent microphone built into it, spent hours just making random sounds and recording them.....it was probably that which got me into Audio Production and mastering.

This thread so badly makes me want to re-watch Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing:

I could have picked up a ghetto blaster for £4 at a car boot last week. Sorry I didnt get it now, would have been good for the shed.

Towards the end of the 80s (as a wee nipper) I remember getting told off for using the term "ghetto blaster".

Fortunately I didn't call it by it's other (more popular, definitely racist) name or I'd have been on a hiding to nothing :)

Ive got a Panasonic like that too, its the RX-DS660 and it goes off like a bomb even on low and being fairly young in good box terms at only around 21 years or so old, it has a CD player still in working order, only problems being the connection on the right hand speaker can be a bit funny, the left hand speaker grill needs work and theres a few paint splashes, somone wants £45 on ebay for one not including postage and mine only cost £4. Heres a pic still in car boot sale filth

Id keep an eye out for certain models too if I were you, some can be worth a lot of money even in poorer condition, I cant remember all the models though I do know the record playing ones and discolites can go for a pretty penny though.

I've been on the look out now for quite some time for a Philips ghetto-blaster and a Sanyo Radio I had as a kid. Don't know their model numbers, but would remember them if I saw 'em.

Any links to databases for this type of thing?

Sadly no to the best of my knowledge but phillips and Sanyo are quite popular on stereo2go so it might be worth while creating an account on there and asking around. The link on this thread has the stereo2go forum on it, basically click boombox database on the main page and it will take you there, hope this helps.

I've had a look around that site, and it looks dangerously adictive - lots of stuff on there I remember hankering after in the 80s. Might just create an account :|
