I've noticed bits of Tom & Jerry are often cut out, usually if, for example, Tom gets covered in mud or oil, or gets his face burnt, where they previously would have had him looking like, for want of a better word, a Golliwog.

I hope no-one's offended by that term, I don't mean it offensively, which is the difference, I think. Someone somewhere decided the term itself is offensive in some way, I completely disagree, I don't think any particular term is offensive in itself unless it's USED offensively or venomously.

But for some reason references in 1950's cartoons are being removed.

What would they make of Al Jolson these days?

They've also cut out all the smoking from all the old Warner Bros./Hanna-Barbera etc. stuff.

You'll have to let us know which version of the DVD that is. I know it's been released several times and I'd hate to be watching a butchered edition :(
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

What have they done to the Young Ones?
When the boys entered the competition to win a Ford tippex and the geezer shows up at the door to present them with their prize - he is accosted by a racist policeman wearing dark glasses(remember?), the whole scene has been sanitised with words cut out completely, I found it to be wierd - as the whole point of the bit was to show the policeman as an ignorant, thick racist.

Sorry to tell you ,but the names are an urban myth.
Master Mate and Tom the cabin boy were the names in the original Pugwash.
The character Willy is about as naughty as it gets.

Stop ruining my fun. Telling an adult "Seaman Staines" doesn't exist is like telling a child Santa doesn't exist.

I do know that Lassie was played by a male dog. All that gender confusion could have pushed him into doing such a thing.
