Help - kids films on BBC1 in the 80s

Post by greenberet79 » Fri May 20, 2011 10:53 am

Does anyone else remember the old films Children's BBC used to show on a Friday afternoon?? Circa 1987/broom cupboard.

They'd be about an hour long and be on between 4.30 and 5.30 (just before Neighbours).

I think they were made by the same production company - it alwats started with pigeons in Trafalgar Square! I think the films were probably from the 1970s. They usually starred kids who would uncover conspiracies or other such rubbish.

Yeah I do remember watching these films on the old style CBBC broom cupboard in the late 1980s. I suppose it was quite fun at the time, although I agree the films are probably pretty dire to watch nowadays.

I only really remember a few of the films. 'Pop Pirates' because it featured Ricky Simmons(Ant Jones from Grange Hill), Bill Treacher (Arthur from Eastenders) and Roger Daltrey. It was a film about a boy band.

'Breakout' I remember as well. That starred John Hasler(T Shirt from the Tea Bag series which was shown on ITV) and David Jackson(Olag Gan from Blake's 7). That was about a couple of criminals who take a kid under their wing and go about on a robbing spree.

I do remember 'A Hitch in Time' as well as that featured time travel and Patrick Troughton.

I do remember watching one film which featured swearing in it. It had a few bl**dys and s*ds in it. Quite shocking at the time as it was shown at the 4.30 timeslot! I think there were complaints to the BBC about that. Does anyone remember that one? The only thing I remember about the storyline was it was about a boy who got accused of stealing and was innocent(I think).

It was always the 'safety' movies that were shown that got me... I'm sure somebody posted a link a month or so ago... they were pretty brutal!

I do remember the 'railway safety' film that got shown to you in primary school in the 1980s. That was pretty scary! The only other other one that was very shocking was the electricity one. I now know not to fly a kite near an electricity pylon!

Egghead's Robot! :P

(Bet it's absolute gash nowadays, it was pretty gashy in the 80s. Remember pulling a loose back tooth out whilst watching it).

The CFF (Childrens Film Foundations) I remember watching these back in the early/mid 80's, only a handful have actually being released on DVD by network (now deleted) and go for stupid amounts of money. The one that has
stuck in my mind since childhood was Haunters of the Deep, where some people get stuck down a mine and spriggans (ghosts) make a humming noise. For months after watching that as a kid, I was terrified of going to bed at night, plus we always went on holiday to cornwall and I point blank refused to go down or near any mines and had to sit those excursions out. I really wanted to revisit it, I contacted the CFF directly who said they could do me a copy for £40 on dvd, but I found an internet source who did one for a fiver. We watched about 2 weeks ago now, and it transpired the ghosts were actually good and helping them to safety, it was very tame to be honest, but the music was very atmospheric and its nice to see old school cornwall footage. I'd love to see some more of these though. If anyone has any DVDs or Avi's of any let me know.

Thanks guys, I wondered if this was where I had watched this old "Pond film" about a poisoned pond and a bunch of kids trying to sort it all out (I had very vague memories of it as a kid).... Tried over the years to find out what the film was called (Only knowing it by the name of "Pond film" and that it was possibly on BBC1 once).

Sure enough, it was a Childrens Film Foundation film.....
"Battle of Billy's Pond" :-)

I have a memory or two of seeing a couple of these.

I seem to remember 'A Hitch In Time' and 'One Hour To Zero'.

Might just have to have a look on youtube... :)

I think it is the overall 'look and feel' of the CFF Films that I remember most. The only one where I can properly remember the plot was Sammy's Super T Shirt.

I mostly remember them from the Saturday Cinema Club, basically a way of mum+dad getting you out of their hair for a while. I think it was 50p and you'd get a few cartoons and a CFF film. Choc Ice not included.

One guy from them I am still a fan of is Dudley Sutton (Tinker out ot that Lovejoy). He was a cracking villain with his lived-in face and he could do malevolence properly. He appeared in a few of them I think. Usually wearing flares and an army surplus coat.

Note: in CFF land NEVER trust anyone driving a Commer side-panel van.

It was great to see the Glitterball and Black Island on youtube. Does anyone have a copy of one hour to zero? Or could they upload it to youtube?

Just had one of the DVD's arrive VOL 3, it has:
Go Kart Go (featuring a young Denis Waterman!)
A Hitch in Time (Patrick Troughton)

Also as a bonus it has: The Magnificent 6 1/2: A Good Dead in Time and The Astronoughts.
also something called ABC Minors Club (guessing this was something shown at the cinema before the films!)
WANTED: Mario Party 3 on N64 (just the Box only) ANY SNES GAMES, OR EMPTY SNES BOXES, INSTRUCTION MANUALS or WHITE INNER TRAYS.
