Scary and funny 70's and 80's Public information films

Post by MattyC64c » Tue Apr 12, 2011 3:39 pm

Most people should be able to remember public information films that were broadcast during the TV adverts in the 70's and 1980's (not the 70's for me though, I was born in 1978). Anyway while we still get public information films they're nothing like these, they don't make them like they used to do they?

Some of these information films are pretty obvious, I mean what dummy would climb a power line to get a Frisbee?

Or this one, which is apparently from 1989
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjgeUiNw ... re=related

Then this one about parking in front of schools. It's from the 70's, but I'm sure I saw it in the early 80's too.

Sadly Children still run in front of cars, and there are more of them now than ever, why don't we get these types of information ads anymore?

Anyone remember the Green Cross Code man? Wow, their a bit cheesy now!

Charley Says "Always tell your mummy before you go off somewhere."

There of course loads of these information films. One of the most interesting films were a set that were luckily never shown. They were called 'Protect and Survive', if these had been shown, something very bad was going to happen, very bad indeed. "This does not mean war is bound to come, but there is an increased risk of this"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IaeeSKpwSQ

That jingle is awfull, the set isn't scary enough, what the heck was that for!

That Aids one "At first only Gays and IV drug users were being killed by Aids" Gays? a bit homophobic don't you think lol. I don't think they could get away with that now, not even in Oz.

This UK Aids information film scared the crap out of me when I first saw it.

The voice of John Hurt, really puts the point across. Mr Hurt now lends his voice to Sky for its "Believe in Better" ad campaign.

SPLINK! with Jon Pertwee was a classic... there's also a Jimmy Saville spot about seatbelts where he puts an egg in a box and shakes it around (this was before the compulsory law came into force)

I definitely saw that one with the frisbee in the power station - my mate next to me in the video room at primary school went "dickhead" a bit too loudly when the kid was breaking in there to get it and got a bollocking....that took me back!
Apparently Kenny Everett did the voice of that cat for the "Charley Says" ones.

Well, since we've just done the 2011 census - here it is explained way back when

When you think you've got problems you don't really need,
They're maybe not as bad as they seem,
Cos in a world full of misery, with hatred and greed,
Your problems are another man's dream.

There's a special part of my brain reserved for the horror I felt when I watched Threads. Now, I must have been 11 or 12 when I saw it and it basically made me ill. I think the burned-out cat limping past the milk bottles was where my mind finally caved in, but I continued watching it until the final classic freeze-frame.

I was a wreck in school the next day and was pretty much 'off colour' for a week or so.

Brilliant stuff.

Does anyone remember this one, about railway safety? It was shown to me in the 1980s in primary school(even though it says 1992 in the date).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnkG7G6n ... 51D5BB8E4F

I do remember another 'electricity pylon' safety film. It featured two boys flying kites near pylons. You can guess the rest. I can't seem to find it on Youtube.
