They played this one at my first wedding, which was perhaps a prophetic highlight of the entire affair.

But is Carl Douglas' Kung Fu Fighting really a novelty record?

Questionable list. Many, I am sure, are not novelties. One stand-out non-novelty is Trio's Da Da Da, a song which presumably only made this list due to it's title. If that is the reason, I can think of several more with similar meaningless titles that have not made the list. Oh, and I wouldn't say that Convoy was a novelty, either.

Yeah it's a bit weird what constitutes a novelty song. I'd have said Convoy was a definite novelty because I always thought it was inspired by the film of the same name, which would make it a prime novelty song cashing on a movie fad, but a check of the facts shows the song inspired the making of the film.

In fact, that whole list has got me in two minds here. I thought "Camouflage" by Stan Ridgeway was a novelty song but it turns out the guy's a seriuos artist with a credible discography. The song just sounds like a novelty because we were given it out of context.

And that whole convoy thing. I remember it sparking off a fair bit of CB radio mania which ultimately led to an appalling song which might have been called Teddy Bear. Which reminded me of that one where it's some woman droning on at her kid about all the stuff she's had to pay for bringing him up but there's "no charge". Are these novelty records?

Also missing from that list is "Capstick Comes Home" by Tony Capstick. It definitely came off the back of a fad (the Hovis adverts that were big at the time) and was in the top ten I'm sure. I'd call that a novelty record.

Chalk Dust - The Umpire Strikes Back anyone?
