Post by mel the bell » Wed Apr 14, 2010 9:53 am

right its not google street view, more mel the bell view, while i was in sheff for the retro rewind do i took a pilgrimage to carver street and took some more upto date shots of where just micro was AND the entrance to alpha house (gremlin graphics)

Image
if i rememeber just micro was the first left window, and the doorway used to be where the small right window is

I took a bigger pic so you can see above the shop, im sure all that above was gremlin graphics, they used to go up stairs from inside the shop, yet the actual street entrance is halfway up the street.

Thats the only one I can find with a quick search - I've seen more out there though.

Looks like that drainpipe has been installed since - the door was just behind the black bordered rectangle on the pavement in that new photo.

Oh crikey.

Just did a quick google looking for the offices I used to work in at Mirrorsoft in London and have discovered (unless my memory is playing tricks on me) that they've demolished the entire building and the ones next door too! :-(

Good job I took a photo from the outside when I was last wandering past there 3 or 4 years ago...

If anyone's is interested...

Mirrorsoft was at 118 Southwark Street (Irwin House), on the corner where Sumner Street meets Southwark Street. The URL above shows street view on the very corner of the office where I used to sit and beaver away on Bloodwych, etc.

Or a little feature in the mag.

Sorry - just edited my post to include the Google maps street view link.

Telecomsoft was at 64-76 New Oxford Street for the last 3 years of its existence (1986-1989). It was on the 1st floor of a building now called ISIS House. It's almost directly opposite where Forbidden Planet relocated to in the late 80s before they moved it down Shaftsbury Avenue. Anyway, Firebird, Rainbird and Silverbird were on the first floor - directly above Morgan Computers.

Cool. The floor plan is a nice little touch too.

Nice list of games you had involvement in too.

I must have walked past that building soooo many times between those years and never knew. Mind you, I grew up in Harlow in Essex and never knew that the Gollop brothers' Target Games was right on my doorstep in the same building as the art shop I went to.

Before I worked for Telecomsoft, I used to do a once or twice a year pilgrimage to London just to spend my hard saved cash at Forbidden Planet/Forbidden Planet 2 (which were then based in Denmark Street and just around the corner in St Giles High Street).

So, getting a job just 4 mins walk from FP was both good and bad from my point-of-view. However, it got better/worse when FP became one shop and moved up the road to directly opposite the office. Talk about direct marketing! ;-)

How spooky - just noticed that the Google Street view for where Mirrorsoft used to be has a Forbidden Planet van driving past...

I think I've got some photos of both FP shops when they were in their original locations and also of the shop that pre-dated them - Dark They Were And Golden Eyed - just up the road in St.Anne's Court, just off Wardour Street.

I wish I'd taken a few snaps of Games Workshop (when they were in Sunbeam Road in London) when I went there for an interview in '84. Or of the Personal Computer Games offices in London (I think it was Oxford St when I went there) around the same time. Ah, the glory of hindsight :)

Oh yes, I remember 'Dark They Were and Golden Eyed'. IIRC wasn't it a red and yellow shop front or did I just make that up?

Both original FP shops were quite small, dark and gloomy inside but they sold stuff you simply couldn't buy anywhere else. Those were the days!

To keep this chat back on the original subject, here's where Realtime Games (3D Starstrike, Carrier Command, etc) used to be located; Prospect House in Leeds (about 5 mins walk from the railway station in the centre).
