Does new technology make you go Wow!!

Post by MattyC64c » Wed Sep 09, 2009 8:32 am

I’m pretty sure the vast majority of retro gamers here were children of the 80’s, a time that when you look back had pretty primitive technology and computers to what we have now, but we loved it all the same.

Last night lying in bed, as you do, I was doing a bit of browsing on my iPod touch, watching a few YouTube videos on it and reading some random stuff on the Wikipedia app. One of the articles I decided to look up was the iPod touch/iPhone hardware specs, wow! This thing has a 400 MHz processor, and a 3D graphics chip! Then I realised (being the tech geek I am) that even if it were possible to hook up 400 C64’s it still wouldn’t be able to match this tiny little computer!

This is now the age of digital music, iPods and portable video/music players. It’s funny when you consider the huge storage capacity of these devices. In the 80’s if I wanted to take my music with me on a car or train journey I’d need a bag or a case full of tapes, now I can carry it all on one digital device, amazing!

When I first saw a DVD player I thought, wow! The ability to watch a movie on disc, no rewinding or need to adjust the tracking, wow, wow, wow!

Some tech baffles me though. Why do some kids these days think it’s cool to blast their music out from their mobile phones! This has to be one of the most annoying inventions ever! Even more so when these ignorant swine’s are sitting alone with this ‘noise’ blasting out from their phone! What’s the point? Don’t they not realise the sound quality would be much better with a set of earphones, ggrrr!!!

I grew up in the late 90s so I became used to fast technological advancements so never really had a wow moment when it comes to it. What marvels me however is how on earth people did anything before the Internet, mobile phones, laptop computers, etc.

I think it has to do with your age and the era you grew up in.

To quote the late great Douglas Adams when asked about our reactions to new technologies:

"Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works. Anything that's invented between when you're fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things."

For me growing up i had a great time, regularly played footy over the park, played Speccy games if it was raining, was never into board games at home, playing 'run away from the strange man in the park staring at us with his hands down the front of his trousers' type games. Cant believe it when kids now say theyre bored when they have 90+ channels on Sky, the internet, games to download, films to rent/download , music etc ! Thought there was a ton to do back then before the internet/laptops etc. Think back then it was good as kids did more things outside (Not robbing etc !) like sports etc, nowadays we seem to be breeding a fair few couch potatoes.

Still anti the mobile phone, for lads nights out it was superb not having the missus calling you every 5 seconds wondering where you are or what time you'll be back. Think a mobile phone is great for driving in case you break down or on a long train journey (games, surfing etc) but on the other hand you have stupid ring tones, people on their phone for ages asking whats for dinner etc.

Its not rose tinted glasses or that but now i cant believe these kids who just say theyre so bored, so much more they can do nowadays. But never was bored on long summer holidays from school.

I'm afraid that nowadays very little new technology makes me go "WOW!", more "Oh gawd! Something else for the numpties and couch potato generation!". I think I have definitely become a grumpy old man on that score. If you consider it:

Mobile phones - A useful innovation that would allow a certain amount of freedom and ease of communication. What they have become is an annoyance. Braindead idiots wandering zombie-like around town either tapping away sending pointless text messages, yapping inanities and not actually watching where they are going. People phoning you up at all hours of the day and you can't even get away from them whilst you are on holiday. Oh and mobile phone masts ruining the countryside just so Chantelle can tell Chardonnay "I wuz sooo censored*d last night yeah!"

iPods - Music on the move without having to carry a sack of tapes. Great idea! Only trouble is they have created even more zombies lurching around with their earphones in and a total lack of awareness of what is going on round them. Yes, you have 10,000 tunes but they don't make you invulnerable when you walk blithely out in front of a bus.

Phones with MP3 players - Great, you don't have to carry a sack of tapes and you can contact the coastguard when you get stuck half way up a cliff too. Only problem is they seem to have been appropriated by the little chav b*stards at the back of the bus that seem to think that everyone wants to hear some ridiculously cr*p hip hop artist singing about how he is "gonna pop a cap in da cops and smack his ho' up" at 250 decibels. Same with camera phones, a good idea but now seemingly its sole use is for posting 'funny' videos on Youtube or taking pictures as some poor sod is happy slapped by teenage thugs.

Big TVs. Utterly fantastic, if I had a house with a 150ft living room and a small fortune I'd probably get one but what is the point of having an HD 52" plasma screen that uses up the electricity requirements of Peru in a 10' by 12' room in a council flat. Not only can you see every pimple on whatever Z-list celeb is on whatever reality show, your nose is about two inches from their ar*e. Add to that 850 channels of rubbish on Sky and voila, instant couch potato happiness overload.

Breathe deeply, let the anger subside... :)
Cue the music, fade to black...

Ha ha good list ! I do like ipods, got one of those tiny ones where you can have 300 songs on it, thats enough for me, quite happy to change them over now and then. People seem to show off about having 10,000 songs on it, how many do you listen to then on your way to work ? "Well 3 or 4.....but i have a huge collection....", yeah great ! Bit like people getting a fancy laptop just to surf the net, a waste !

Yep those chavs who listen to some of that rap, dress like theyre from South Central LA when in fact theyre from Ascot.

I still get excited by new technology. I was actually thinking about it this morning as I was driving to work. I was wondering if the rate of advancement from the '80s to now could possibly be maintained through the next 30 years, or more.

I'm really looking forward to what we come up with. 3D TV will be here next year, and there are new exciting things coming out all the time.

So, yes, I do still go "Wow!" :D

Not an iphone fan but i do love the netbooks/mini computers.

Think back to the 90's and you used to get a brick for a laptop, slow as anything. Now look how cheap netbooks are, run a ton of games easily, superb for emulators and the price ! Would have been a dream to a kid in the 80's to have a mini computer like that which is so fast

35 years old so maybe I'm on the cusp of "this is all wrong!"

I still do. Maybe easily impressed! I'm still wowed with USB memory sticks for heavens sake.

The last generation of consoles hasn't wowed me but colour pics from Mars from the NASA probes didn't just impress me but basically overwhelmed me with awe. Colour photographs. Of landscapes on Mars. I find that breathtaking.

I love new technology dood... I just can't afford any of it!

To be honest I'm still amazed with just how things like cameras and Wi-Fi actually work and being a simple sort, I prefer to wallow in my ignorance. Makes it more magical that way!

Those chavs on the bus though...they should treat it like smoking and kick them off!
