I was such a fervent Amiga supporter that I didn't get a PC until 2001 (and even then I only paid £75 for it). Such was my belief that the Amiga would rise again. **sigh**

The first PC I ever had was an 8086 CPU based and had a green screen monitor. It was huge and collected from a computer show in Leicester. On the way we looked at a game running on a PC Engine. Little did I know that shop was Telegames.

An absolutely fantastic period. The beginning of the PC Evolution and the slow demise of the PC Engine.

Happy and sad all in one sentence. :D :(

First computer I *owned* was a Video Genie, followed by C64, C128, A500, B2000.

In 1991 I used PCs for the first time; IBM PS/2 Model 30, hulking great 286 based tower with a 40mb HD. And DOS 3.3, which could only access a 32MB partition... DOH! But I learned everything there was to know about memory optimisation. EMS, XMS, HMA, UMBs... loved it. Would still pitch up against DR DOS and QEMM (still have QEMM somewhere, together with DRDOS6)

First PC I owned was an Apricot 386-25, very small footprint piza box sized box. It was acquired... First PC I bought was an Escom P133, 16MB RAM, 1GB HD, from the Escom shop in Ripon in 1996, together with a laserprinter. Leaving the Forces, I wanted to produce decent looking CVs, better than I could produce on my B2000, Deskjet 500; Amiga word processors just couldnt touch Word Perfect, let alone Office 95. For an Escom, not a bad machine with an Intel Endeavor mobo, able to double the amount of cache RAM and later upgrade to P166 by jumper change.

The was the first and last "pre-fabbed" PC I bought. Since then, except the second hand Compaq servers,,, a brace of 5000's and a 6400 for real work.

Jesus H Corbett......

I would love to see a top (very top) spec Amiga running these days to see what it is capable of.......
you can see what some souped up amiga1200s can do when they have the accelorator card, even with an 030 card and some generous amount of ram you can run doom, quake though would need a faster card again
i agree, i've got a blizzard 030 50mhz with 32mb ram in mine and it runs alien breed 3d 2 brilliantly, not the best game to use as a example but with no accelleration it runs more like driller on the c64
I had a fairly decent B2000 in 1993 - GVP G-Force 030/40 c/w 4MB RAM, Picasso II. Not bad, good for work Not bad? Actually, at the time, very fast. Later I ended up with a pair of A4000s. Once had a Warp Engine 68040/40, one a Cyberstorm PPC233/060/66. Cybevision 64/3D and a Picasso IV between them, built up between 1996 and 2004. I loved the Ami like the next die-hard, I was still writing for AUI until 1996, and still spending money. But, whilst the OS and 'philosphy' was superb, and was (and still is) way ahead of Windows, the software was paling. You would be disappointed to see what it is not capable of. Need a PPC ot play an MP3 file?? Surely not. Cant play 3D game at >30fps?? Surely not. Cant use native display resolution on a 21" LCD monitor? Surely not! Sadly true.

I do regret selling them, both to the same person over a period of 6 months, (and was astonished how much he offered, 4 figures each!). But TBH, I remember using the A4Ks for a while, then booting up my "fast" B2000, and thinking how slow it was...

I used (played with) an Amiga from 89 to 91. Didn't bother with computers/games for six years after that (Art college - I had better stuff to do). Never bought a PC myself but my girlfriend (now wife) brought her Pentium when we started living together.
I think it was only five or six months later that we finally got sick and tired of the blasted thing and bought a Mac. :)

After by Amiga I got a 486 Dx2 66mhz 4 meg ram 2x CD drive. It was from Vtech and it was a really sh**e machine. The motherborad was full off wire jumpers the CPU was bad, the PSU kept browning out after I put another 4 mega off ram in. The monitor was the worst off all, it was only display 800x640 nothing else. It came with dos 6.22 and Windows 3.11, however as a free "gift" I got the 1st version of Windows 95 on disks :(

After owning an Amstrad CPC my parents decided to go with the same company & get an Amstrad 5286. Sadly this was in the age where 386s were the latest technology, so it was outdated when we bought it. I made the most of it until I got my first job at 15 & bought my first 486DX4-100.

486DX4-100.
Damm I always wanted the Dx4, you could play quake on it :) What was strange was it was faster than a P60 and P75 but would not run half the stuff :(

Yeah I got a 486 DX4 as an update to my knackered old 486 SX 33! It was a good chip. Allowed me to get about an extra year and a half out of my PC, in the end I upgraded to a Pentium 166 Mhz MMX!
