Deep Space 9 vs Babylon 5

Post by resident paul » Sun Oct 12, 2008 12:17 pm

Both series came out roughly the same time(DS9 1yr headstart).
Which do you think the better one?
I think Babylon 5 has the better stories & feels more like a airport with lots of people in it.
DS9 only got going when the dominion started to threaten.
Babylon 5 fact: The pilot espiode special effects done by amiga graphics from Newtek.

Yeah, Lightwave was used for the 3D rendering, and Will Wheaton (Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: TNG) used to work there (Newtek, that is).

I liked both shows, but B5 was the best of the two, and one of my favourite shows ever.

Babylon 5 for me too.

DS9 was brilliant when the Dominion were in it, but B5 was fantastic from episode one - right through to the final one. I wish they could do another one!

DS9, but to be fair I only watched a few episodes of Babylon 5, DS9 did take a while to get going and will be probably the only time the Star Trek franchise attempt a space station. Both shows had longer term plots than many Next Generation one off episodes which helped. Although Next Gen was superb from Season 3 onwards...

Babylon 5, it was quite grim in places.

Babylon 5; the ongoing plot made it much more involving, although you really needed to be in there from the first episode to fully appreciate it.

I just looked at a several Babylon 5 clips on YouTube. What a bunch of corn.

The costumes take me back to 'Lost In Space'. I do remember that one sexy military lady, though.

To quote spaced " Babylon 5's a big pile of sh*t!"

Of all the Sc-Fi stuff on TV B5 is the only one I watched for some time.

Both had good bits and bad bits, both had fantastic and rubbish characters all the way through, but I prefer B5 purely because (to me) it was like an epic SF book in TV form, whereas DS9 was just a good TV show.

What about the story that Straczynski took his idea of a SF drama based around a space station to Paramount who rejected, then suddenly came up with the idea of DS9?

What happened in the end with that guy with the hair who had an invisible goblin eyeball creature thing stuck to his shoulder that he had to keep getting bladdered? No, really. I found that storyline fascinating, but could never find it again...
