Paul Woakes Interview please

Post by Mort » Fri Mar 03, 2006 6:48 pm

Any chance of tracking down Paul Woakes, I am sure a lot of us would just love to hear how he had the idea for Mercenary, one of the most legendary programmers on the 8 bits and even more elusive the Matthew Smith! :P

Not sure whether its my imagination, but wasn't there a Paul Woakes interview in a very old issue of GamesTM? Anyway lets see another one in RG! :)

Ah! Could be that I saw it whilst flicking through EDGE in WHSmiths...

So Paul actually decided to speak to an interviewer? Admitedly I had been thinking about chasing a few leads to do a Mercenary Making Of as well recently, but if it's actually been done... what issue of Edge was it?

It's curious... Paul has always been a bit of a recluse, even people who've known him such as Yak said he wasn't one for the publicity. I always figured it would be really hard to get him to talk about retro stuff.

Well if someone can point me in the direction of the right issue, I'll go and track it down.

Either way, does anyone actually know what he looks like? No photo has ever been published. The closest I've ever gotten is possibly seeing him at a computer show in the mid 80s as Novagen had stands at some of the early ones.

I'd love to see an article on the Mercenary series. Unfortunetly Bruce Jordan passed away in 2007 and I've never seen an interview with Paul Woakes (except for one I think in C&VG circa 1985.)
