XBox360/VGA/Washed Out Colours

Post by Nitters » Mon Oct 22, 2007 1:21 pm

I discovered this today, which to be fair probably is common knowledge only I didn't know about it so I thought I'd share.

I use a VGA cable to connect my 360 to my TV. The colours have always been a bit washed out (blacks being grey and that kind of thing) which I assumed was just a "quality" of the TV.

It turns out that it actually has to do with something called IRE/Black levels. Apparently American tvs use an IRE level of 7.5, whilst everyone else uses an IRE of 0 - and the XBox defaults to the US standard - hence whilst my TV was expecting 0 to display black, it was getting 7.5 and therefore a shade of grey.

As of the spring update, the 360 allows you to change this by going to System>Console Settings>Display>Reference Levels. I changed mine to 'Expanded', and hey presto colours are no longer washed out.

Thought so - but now it's posted for posterity just in case I should ever have a bout of amnesia :)
