Top-50 Arcade games

Post by Snarko » Wed Nov 09, 2016 5:32 pm

I'd REALLY like a list of top-50 or (preferably) 100 arcade games ever! From Retrogamer staff or voted by us readers, I don't care. :)

I want a big freakin' article with lots of text, interviews from the game creators etc. Maybe similar to the top 150 games of all time in RG150? I know it has been a top25 list in RG54... nice list but it seems a bit old now and are missing many entries. This article could then be included in a third edition of Bookazine Retro Gamer Book of Arcade Classics!!!

What do you think guys?

Thank you in advance!!! :D

Sounds like a good idea. Little bits on home conversions would be a nice addition. Though the whole thing could quickly swell to a book in its own right!

Hell yeah, that'd definitely be my prefered choice, a dedicated "top-100 Arcade games ever"-Bookazine!

Perhaps also (in addition to the top-100 list?), best in different categories:
Shoot'em up: Defender, DoDon Pachi
Racing: Outrun 2, Sega Rally
Old School: Frogger, Mr Do, Tempest
Lightgun: House of the Dead 2, Point Blank, Time Crisis 2
Fighting: Street Figher II Turbo, Super Street Fighter IV
Platform: Bubble Bobble, Donkey Kong JR
Action: Marble Madness. Gauntlet
.....

Definitely think there's mileage in RG creating and arcade bookazine. Could even include conversion capers to tie it in to home computers. A while ago RG did some great features on arcade games, comprehensive details and nice big pics of the cab, artwork and controls.

Well they've already done an arcade bookazine which was pretty good.

But yeah i would love a massive countdown of classic games. I just wish some of the recent book publishers (Boyo/Sam Dyer) would do an arcade one. Dont get me wrong i love the Speccy/Amiga/C64 books and now the NES/upcoming SNES one but would love a pure arcade one done in the same type of style.

Aye, given RG has done Top 100s for home systems, a Top 100 arcade should really be a shoe-in. Maybe the team just doesn't read Q&A, so are oblivious to this thread and potential spread for a future issue. Anyhow, my 10 to assist, in no particular order:

Outrun
Space Harrier
Green Beret
Scramble
Super Hang-On
Giga Wing
Sexy Parodius
Commando
Xybots
Rolling Thunder
