Retro arcades in the Uk?

Post by Outrun74 » Tue Mar 18, 2014 3:31 pm

Hi there,

Does anyone know the best arcades these days with some of the old classics eg outrun, space invaders etc
Are there any good ones on the south coast?

Thanks!

My mate is opening a dedicated Retro arcade shortly, it's based in Bristol.

You can still find a few arcades in Hunstanton with the likes of The Simpsons, Operation Wolf etc

There's Astro City in Southend-on-Sea. Plus, there is Arcadia on the Isle of Wight. Also, there's The Heart of Gaming in North Acton, London; they salvaged some of machines from the now sadly deceased Casino Arcade that was in central London.

I'll have to check out Astro city next time I'm there.

Clacton's magic city arcade had the old Simpsons aracde game last time I was there in 2013. But they recently sold their retro items (I don't know if The Simpsons was one of them that was sold as well).

The best one i think is !....

http://www.arcade-club.com/

Mentioned this place a few times, its about a mile from where i live so i'm over the moon !

Based just north of Manchester (Haslingden), theres 100+ machines there. Pay a tenner and you've got all the machines on free play, pinball as well, some modern consoles also and some retro consoles.

But the machines are brilliant. Theyre the ones which are mostly used/lent to Play Expo and other events. Well worth going to.

Andy the owner was the guy featured in Collectorholics about his huge arcade collection

Open saturday from 6-10pm and now open on sundays, think the times 12-6pm. Got a fair few hydraulic cabs, nice variety of retro arcade games and some later ones. Again i'm over the moon this place is so close to me !

I've just visited a place in Blackpool that is worth checking out. It isn't actually an arcade but a collectables shop near South Pier. In the back of the shop, the owner has about a dozen machines, about half are dedicated cabs and the other half are tabletops, all of which are switched on and available to play. Games include Asteroids (which looks brand new!), Frogger, Scramble, Defender, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Space Invaders, Ms Pac Man plus a few others. He also has a great collection of wall mounted games from the 60's, very interesting if you like that sort of thing. The owner is very pleasant and I had a good chat with him. The shop is called Brooks Collectibles and is on the corner of Waterloo Road, just off the promenade. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

If you really want a yank back in time, the Milestones museum in Basingstoke has an alley of carefully restored vintage old-penny-operated mechanical games, grabbers and animations.

Hi, just a quick update, we have now moved to Bury Gtr. Manchester and have a total of 7000Sqft in the new arcade,
we cope with up to 300+ people in one sitting :) (Old place max was 100) and the playable collection is approaching 200,
Still the same deal as before £10 on the door (£5 for under 16's) for unlimited credits on all the machines! ;)

Check out our Public Facebook page (no need to have a FB account to view) for the latest updates

Another thumbs up for Heart of Gaming in Acton - think it runs as a not-for-profit too, so well worth supporting something that's done for the love rather than the $$$
