Suggestions for Retro Gamer

Post by Drisk » Sat Feb 08, 2014 12:29 pm

Love the magazine and own every single issue (including the Live Publishing days) so I naturally have started to see a lot repeated content happening in your articles.

Below are my suggestions on improving the magazine...

One thing I have always felt missing from the magazine is more news on Retro events and a sense of community. I would love if a regular page was dedicated to all the Retro events up and coming up and where. As often I only get to hear of these Retro events after they have happened (when Retro Gamer covers it :-) ). Also a summary of retro related games or products would also be cool.. Like the free book you mentioned by Bob Pape (man I loved reading that book).

I also miss your Company Profile articles that you used to do when you went indepth into a certain developer...Ones I would love to see that I believe you havent done yet..

Silicon & Synapse/Blizzard Entertainment
Crystal Dynamics
Irem
Tell Tale Games

Also Individuals
Mike Lamb, Dan Malone, Chris Hülsbeck, Yu Suzuki, Hiroshi Kawaguchi

*** Actually after reading the brilliant Bob Pape book I think it would be awesome if Retro Gamer commisions some other coders in the Spectrum and Amiga days to serialize their memories of their time in a several part article (maybe 5 pages each issue for say five issues and so really indepth).

I would also love more detailed how to coverage... I have currently ordered myself an Action Replay for the Saturn as I understand I can play region free games ..but having expert how to articles on how to do import gaming and suggested classic import titles would be great. (I have Thunderforce V ordered and on its way :D )

All in all I adore the magazine and can't thank you enough for what you are producing. I guess the main thing would be to have more indepth articles often I feel you get great people lined up and yet in the article I dont feel I know much more than at the start of it... I know I keep coming back to Bob Papes book, but that's what I personally want..I want to feel what it was like making a game..the trials, the tribulations and the fond memories of what it was like to produce these games.

Hi there,
The mag is still doing the company profiles they are just under a slightly different format these days. I'm working on one at the moment for a quirky developer from the 80s.

Some good ideas otherwise, I'm already working on an article with mike lamb so hope to develop that one soon, possibly as an in the chair.

Keep on reading!

Unfortunately not and it appears to have gone pear-shaped in the meantime...oh well!

Drisk, Retro Interview with Mike Lamb is in next month's GamesTM.
